Miss Gay America 2009 Victoria DePaula
January 2009
I am hopeful that everyone has had a wonderful holiday season. I am amazed at how quickly the months go by- we prepare for so long and then it’s over faster than you can blink an eye. This year has been a blessed one for me. I look forward to whatever comes my way this next year and can only hope it's as great as the last one.
December has been a great month. It is what I'm calling “the foundation” of my next year. Any time you reach a journeys end a new one begins. I compare that to winning Miss Gay America and being Miss Gay America, because with the title, superb administration is key. My whole month started out with "The Father/ Daughter" weekend. I felt like I was starting the first day of school again! I was very excited to get my hands in the new school book (The MGA Handbook). It was everything I hoped it would be. We went over the rules and regulations of Miss Gay America and even had mock scores to tabulate and check over. It was a great review for me, but also a learning experience. Larry & Terry received an A+ from me for being great hosts, I really felt like a Queen!
The weekend was about schooling, but the bonding is what made it very special. One thing that I got to do with the guys is watch past years of MGA that I haven't ever seen. It was so fabulous to get to see so many of my sisters crowned! Although it was before I had the wonderful opportunity of participating in MGA, I could not take my eyes off of Blaze Star, Vicki Vincent, Brandy Alexander, Valerie Lohr, Tiffany Bonet, Lauren Taylor, Linda Carerro and Catia Lee Love-they captured the true essence of poise, talent and beauty. I am anxious to watch Maya Montana's year when I'm back at the end of January. There is one MGA that I finally got to experience after hearing so much about her over the eight years of competition for me and that’s Naomi Sims- OMG! She was fabulous, if you ever get to watch her please do!
On Saturday night we did a fundraiser for the Pegasus Group. It was so nice to see Steve Devore and Chris Bryant and meet my newest sister Ashley La’More! We laughed all weekend long. The weekend ended with dinner at Paula Dean's Restaurant- needless to say, I started the gym as soon as I got back! I must say that I was sad to leave.
The next weekend was my monthly show at Missie B's where Billy Wilson (Jessica Jade) was our special guest. Followed by my annual Christmas party the next night, the weekend was full of fun and of special friends including Robert York and Kane. Sunday brunch was delish and also, my friend Donna Asher rang in her 50th with a birthday bash! She loves female impersonation and is a huge fan of Barbara Streisand so we did a show in her honor themed “Barbara”! I finally got to perform "A piece of sky" from the movie Yentel, and it was amazing!
The holiday season is my favorite time of year and being a female impersonator I love to perform Christmas songs. So the next weekend my good friend Loreal had her Christmas show and I got to perform my holiday selections. It made me very happy! Now we are at Christmas. I spent it with my family both Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. We had a joy-filled holiday and goodness there was so much food! I ate way too much but that’s what the holidays are for, right?
My next stop is back in Tulsa with my sister Catia. That will be a great past time as I get ready to enter a new stage in my life. Life in my twenties has been everything one can hope for. I have learned so much and met so many great friends that I welcome my soon to be new age of thirty. I feel like if my 30's are half as good as my 20's were, I'm in good shape!!
I wish you all a healthy, happy and prosperous New Year!
Until next time,

February 2009
I’m so excited that my official reign as Miss Gay America 2009 has begun. Time rapidly passes by, but it has been so enjoyable thus far. The pageant dates are being set and I am gearing up for what is going to be the busiest year of my life. I hope that each of you are doing your homework and have thought about the preliminary you would like to compete as preparation is key for competition and it is always smart to think ahead and to choose early.
The last weekend in December was a special one because I was back in Tulsa with my MGA sister Catia Lee Love for a Harvey Christmas!
Catia's mother, sister, and nieces (from Montana ), closest friends and I were there and it was so fun! Everyone had a gift to open which was very special because they all had great meanings behind them. I was very impressed how well Aron/Catia knew all his friends. The food was great and the rum balls were even better. It was a start to a very eventful weekend. The show that night was packed. I got to perform with Tabitha Taylor (who made me the cutest winter hat for my bald head!) and Samantha West. We laughed all night long. Rachael Erikks, Sarah Lewis, Kayne, and Adrianna were all there and Tessa Traxler even brought me some glitter! It was so nice to see everyone gather that weekend for the shows.
The New Year has been amazing and a busy one I might add. I rang in 2009 in St. Joseph , MO where the show cast and I performed in our regular show. The owners and staff of Shaft are so fun and hospitable. I was grateful and thankful to have been with great people to celebrate the New Year! That weekend also marked 30 wonderful years that I have been livin' and kickin' strong. It was a wonderful week of celebration with a show in my honor on Saturday night with a host of fabulous friends, entertainers and special guests L’Oreal and Melinda Ryder. The next night I was surprised with a birthday bash given by my mother! Imagine my surprise and to walk into a place that was full of family and friends there to celebrate my 30th birthday. I was overwhelmed and touched! It was a blast!
That next weekend I was back in St. Louis for another round of entertainment. Upon my arrival at the Grey Fox, I was surprised to find my station decorated for my birthday with streamers and balloons. I felt like a little kid again. Tumara Mahorning, Sasha Nichole and I performed to a packed house. Sasha made a cake for me and sang the birthday song on stage, it was so enjoyable. A special thank you to Joie/ Tumara for being such a great friend and making me always feel like I’m at home. Love you!
Sunday night at the Complex was a blast I got to finally meet and work with an entertainer that I have heard so much about, the talented Miss Desire DeMorney. I could not stop looking at her because she is breathtaking. I had to apologize for staring because I was stunned at her beauty. It was a very enjoyable time chatting with her and my Missouri sisters Dieta Pepsi and Alexis Principle. It was also nice to catch up with the promoter of Miss Gay Midwest, Mr. Joe Bradley.
The weeks are flying by. I had one more stop in St. Louis before heading back to Kansas City . There is new place on the scene for shows in St. Louis called the Bastille and it was off the charts! It is a neighborhood bar that is on the smaller side but they have wall to wall people arrive for the shows. It was amazing. The emcee was one of my MGA sisters, Miss Vicki Vincent, as well as Jade Sinclair and Melissa Marney who performed their hearts out. It was another great time in St. Louis . It was also very touching to see Vanessa Vincent, Erica Leigh Foster and family, Musica Malone, Dayona Hilton, Tabbi Katt, Madison Elise and Crystal Lace. A special thank you to Don for the booking… I hope to return soon for another wonderful visit...
I returned home...... but only for one day. I unpacked and then repacked again because it was time for a tour down south. First stop was Branson , Missouri at the Shake it up Cabaret. It was wonderful to get to work with Justice Janelle Moore and a wonderful cast of entertainers auditioning for four spots in their show cast. What a great venue to perform! It was a very quick and fun trip. My next stop was Little Rock , Arkansas . It was so nice to be back and see some very special friends. The Friday night show was a quick one and it meant that we got home to rest a little earlier. Another MGA sister, Dominique Sanchez, is always so much fun to work with and share the stage with her talent and beauty.
I was able to sleep in a bit on Saturday because I knew I would not be home until the early hours of the morning. Performing shows at midnight and then again at two, truly keeps an entertainer on her game. So after sleeping in I got ready and met the legendary Norma Kristie at his new clubs in downtown Little Rock , which are incredibly nice. We caught up on life and had a great time. It was a nice surprise to also run into Mark Bostian. What a great day with Norman and friends and now it was time to head out for the shows. I have to say that there is something about performing on the stage at Discovery that is indescribable. The curtain, lights and a packed venue make you feel like you are on top of the world. It is a great feeling and I am so fortunate to experience it. Thank you Norman for all of your years of devotion to Miss Gay America and the leadership, as it was an honor to perform inLittle Rock again as Miss Gay America 2009! I can’t wait to come back!!
So now it was time to pack the car and head to my next stop in Fayetteville , Arkansas . I got to spend some much needed time with friends Ken and Darrell, the promoters of Miss Gay Heartland America . That night we were performing at Xanadu and OMG!, the crowd was unbelievable and another blast of an experience. I am so thankful and humbled to meet so many newcomers that are thirsty and ready for competition. I am looking forward to when our paths cross again.
I have really grown to appreciate and love traveling. Staying busy is working well with me but sometimes one must take a break from all the madness. With that said, my best friend Eddieand I went to visit our good friend John in Chicago . Need I say more!! Chicago is such a great city and so much fun. I don’t think I have ever been so cold. Can you say 15 below zero. Brrrr!! We bundled up and walked the streets of the windy city anyway! I was so excited because I got to meet the owner of the Continental pageantry system, Jim Flint. On Saturday night we went to The Baton Lounge to watch the show. I really enjoyed chatting with Victoria Le Paige, Chilli Pepper, Monica Monroe, Mimi Marks and the beautiful Maya Douglas. The Baton Lounge cast is breathtaking! Thanks to Jim for the amazing and incredible hospitality!
As I look back on this month it is so rewarding to come into contact with so many people across the country. Even though we are so different, we share the same common bond and that is the art of female impersonation. With anything, the sky is always the limit. Good things happen to good people and if your heart is in it, you have nothing to fear or lose.
As we enter the new pageant season keep in mind the goals that you have set for yourself. Study every aspect of that goal and make it yours and own it from start to finish. I am proud of the entire MGA family and I am honored to be your symbol of excellence.
Until next time,

March 2009
The last weekend in January was a trip to remember! I was back in Memphis with the boys! Also in attendance were Sasha Nichol and Jade Sinclair. We were there for the sixth annual Mystic Krewe of Pegasus MemphisMardi Gras Ball- it was amazing. It had to be one of the most beautiful events I have ever been to! The lighting, table decorations and the costumes were breath taking and the Memphis hospitality is unforgettable! It was wonderful to enjoy the company of Bill Zachary, Steve Divore, the Pegasus Krewe and Chris Bryant. It was an honor to get to perform/emcee such a wonderful event.
The weekend was very enjoyable as I finished up my training to be MGA. It was a great review on what I have studied for the past eight years. I am anxiously waiting to put my administrative skills to work. On March 13 (Mid-America) my official journey begins.
That weekend I also got to watch the videos that I still needed to view. I finally got to see MGA 1998 Maya Montana crowned and it was great! We also watched Miss Gay Heart of America videos from 1983 and 1985 with promoters Mike and Rodney. My, how female impersonation has changed! As always, it was more than enjoyable to spend a long weekend with my new family L&T.
My next stop was back to St.Louis for Miss Gay Metropolitan, a prelim for Miss Gay Missouri. Daniel (Vanessa Vincent), Zane and Duane put on a top-notch event -professional from start to finish. I was so impressed that I told them they needed to promote for MGA also! The day started with a meet and greet party given by the promoters, they put so many “extras” into their pageants it’s nice to see all the energy and enthusiasm. The food made by Daniel’s husband Drew was terrific-it was great to meet him as we have something in common. We are both Italian so we had a lot to talk about! It was a special night because I got to spend time with my former sisters of Missouri including Jeff (Atheena Voch’e), Douglas (Ineda Cocktail), Joie (Tumara Mahorning), Patrick (Sasha Nicole) and my newest sister Ricky (Sparkle Iman). The night got even better with six contestants competing for the title. The judges (Deann Dimercurio, JD, Douglas and Paula Croffard) had their job cut out for them. It was a fabulous pageant and what an honor to receive The Excellence award with beautiful flowers. Thank you so much for everything, I had a great time.
The next weekend marked my national holiday (lol) V.D. (Valentine’s Day) and I had the pleasure to be back in Quincy , Illinois with sista Jade Sinclair, Channing LaRue and Melissa Marnier. The four of us had a great time spending the infamous “day of love” together. It’s always a plus to see so many people enjoy the art of female impersonation. Thank you Ireane and Quincy for having me back I truly enjoy my time with you!
Okay, so it’s now time to celebrate Mardi Gras! What better place to celebrate it than St. Joseph Missouri . I’m telling you the people of St. Joe really know how to throw a party. The show was so much fun and the people watching were even more fun. Dustin and Mike- thank you for giving us such an awesome place to perform.
My next stop is to Tampa , Florida . I have some really exciting news to share with you! The Miss Gay America Pageant system and I have been selected to be the spokesperson for GEOVAX Laboratories. GEOVAX is a company that is now in human trials for a HIV vaccine. This is HUGE! This weekend is the kick off show promoting the efforts of finding a cure! GEOVAX will also be my platform as Miss Gay America and I am honored to promote their awareness to all of you. For more information on GEOVAX please visit their Website at www.geovax.com.
It’s hard to believe that pageant time is here. I am so excited as I continue along my journey as Miss Gay America. My experience so far has been unbelievable and I thank you all for your continued support!

April 2009
It’s that time of year again when our dreams bud just like the trees and flowers of spring. It is a time to put forth the effort to make goals a possibility and dreams a reality. This is my favorite season of the year because it is the beginning of a new time, and pageant season is just that! We reflect on past successes with the hope that our own dreams for the future can come true.
The month of March started off with a very inspirational experience. I was in Tampa , Florida for GEOVAX awareness. I was brought in as a spokesperson for the company and to entertain. The weekend started off with the news conference with the Doctors of GEOVAX. Doctor Harriott Robinson, the founder of the vaccine, was so fabulous! He, along with Dr. Bob McNally, who were completely shocked that a man could look like a woman…it was a great experience! The weekend was packed with events-I just had to bring my mother along for a weekend get-away. The purpose of the weekend was to spread the awareness about the vaccine. The first appearance for me was at the new “hot spot” Ybor City Le’ Olive’. I was in the show with Rue Paul, Amy Dimilo of Florida -the venue was beautiful and the show was a lot of fun.
The next night was the big event. Matthew Mushlin and Michael Bollig did a fantastic job putting the event together for GEOVAX so perfectly. The show was at the Honey Pot! OMG…this club was unbelievable! Three floors of FABULOUS! Steve Moss did an amazing job designing his “state of the art” club. The night started off to the talents of Florida ’s own Alisha Markstone, Daniel Hunter and Nicolette-it was wonderful to perform with all of them! The night got even better with the talents of Melinda Ryder, Channing LaRue and my Miss Gay America Sister, Charity Case. The show was a hit and Team GEOVAX was greatly entertained. A special thanks to TR for helping out with all of the weekend festivities.
Although all good things must come to an end, my mother and I stayed another day to spend some quality time together. We went to the aquarium and on a wild dolphin excursion, it was so exciting to see the dolphins in their natural habitat-I have always been partial to dolphins, their intelligence amazes me! The trip is one I will never forget and I am so thankful to be a part of such a wonderful event honoring the advancement of the fight against AIDS.
So my official reign now begins and I am now on my way to the first prelim, Miss Gay Mid-America. My thoughts are crazy at this point because I am thinking to myself “Am I really finally here? Am I really MGA?” What wonderful thoughts they were! I got intoMemphis early and me and the boys had a great time putting the finishing touches on what was going to pan out as a wonderful event. The day started off with a delicious luncheon that was catered. Myself along with Memphis Michaels, Sasha Leigh Chambers,Stephanie Lane , Chantel Rashae, Jade Sinclair, Madison Lachay and Sasha Nichole, caught up on the times and enjoyed the time spent together. As I went through all of my administrative duties I was having flashbacks of myself back in my competition days-glad to be on the “other side of the table”, I might add, but I miss the unknown excitement of being in competition. The girls came prepared with impressive packages and the will to win. Congratulations to all of them for a job well done, and to the new Miss Mid Americar Chantel Rashae and first alternate Madison Lachae-best of luck to you both at Nationals.
I couldn’t have asked for a better first pageant. Thank you to Mikaila Kay for a job well done as lead judge, to Mike Divokey for being a great tabulator, Rodney Brown for being a wonderful stage manager, Dominique Sanchez and Rachel Erikks for being great “big sisters” and M.C.’s. Last, but not least, Larry and Terry for not only being extraordinary bosses, but most importantly, great friends.
My next stop is to Miss Gay Delaware, I wish all of the contestants the best of luck! (to be continued in the May 2009 newsletter)
Until next time,

Miss Gay America 2009
May 2009
Greetings to all,
I can’t believe I’m at my six month mark being Miss Gay America. Time is flying by and before we know it, we will be crowning our new Miss Gay America. I am very impressed on how prepared contestants and promoters have been! It seems that everyone has done their home work and the competition is going to be more than fabulous! It is so rewarding to see all the effort and energy put into play by the contestants and the support that the promoters give is priceless.
In my last letter, I left off on my way to Miss Gay Delaware. The plane ride was great but my arrival was even better. As I walked to retrieve my luggage, who should be standing there? Scott and Barry in matching red shirts with the biggest smiles ever! I knew then that the weekend was going to be memorable. Right off the bat we all started joking around and carrying on like we had known each other for years- I could tell it was going to be the start of a great friendship. That night, a dinner party was thrown in Karen Thomas’ (Miss Gay Delaware 2008) honor. The hosts were my new friends Gene and Vinnie- we too bonded right away. There were many at the dinner and the food was delish, it was great meeting the kind and wonderful people of Delaware .
The next morning was registration and Natasha Rose, Janell Collins and Tisha Towers were ready to put on one big fight for the crown. The boys were so excited to compete for the title and male interview was the first punch. The pageant was held in “Fire House” and the firemen were pretty hot! The pageant was graced with many formers and the entertainment was beautiful! The judges Brooke Lane, Miss Peaches, Blair Michael's, Mona Lotts and The Man in the Red Hat did a wonderful job picking the new Miss Gay Delaware Tisha Towers and first Alternate Janell Collins. Best of luck to you ladies at Nationals! The pageant was a success and Scott and Barry did an amazing job putting it all together.
The weekend still had one more day. I did an appearance at the Delaware pride Bingo-a- go-go hosted by Anita Mann. The event was so fun. It was nice to see many walks of life get together to raise money for AID's research and Delaware Pride. That night there was an after-show in the honor of the new Miss Gay Delaware at Baxter's. Thank you to everyone who came and supported the event- it was so nice to have met you all! I had one more stop to make before my night came to an end. I got to make a very special appearance at the Crimson Moon where Tisha Towers hosts her Sunday night show, it was a blast . I would like to thank all of my new friends of Delaware for making me feel so at home and all I can say is that they are "crazy but loyal".
The month of April has been a joyful time. The spring and summer months are my favorite time of year, I love the warm weather and the sun. This is the time where I feel the most motivated to get outside and enjoy life. Easter with my family was eventful as the 50 of us all gathered for Church, dinner and of course dessert! The bunny didn't come to see me but I did enjoy my little brother and niece/nephews candy.
My next trip was to the beautiful state of Maryland for the 25 year anniversary of Miss Gay Maryland. This was my third trip to Baltimore and its better each time. I arrived on a Friday afternoon and was greeted by the one and only Tatiana Voche (Miss Gay Maryland America 2008). We had a good trip down memory lane as we made way to the hotel. That night there was also a dinner in Jonathan’s honor with me and the judges- it was mouth watering. Gilbert hosted the dinner and his cooking was fantastic we had crab cakes and Filet Mignon, yum- yum! Tatiannia, Reba, Kofi, Aunt Tilli, Stephen (Pure Chocolate), Romance and Christopher Peterson laughed the entire dinner. It was a great way to start an entertaining weekend. After dinner we had the honor of seeing Christopher Peterson in action. For those of you who do not know him, he is a professional Female Impersonator who does just about any character you can think of from Tina Turner to Carol Channing. He changes costumes right there on stage and never changes his make-up, all of the illusion comes from his mannerisms and facial expressions. Oh, and did I mention he sings LIVE and sounds just like each impersonation! He got two thumbs up form me! I think anyone who does an impersonation of anyone one should watch this man!!! After the show, me and my bff Eddie, John and Kofi went to the Eagle. Boy, did we hear about that all weekend long ( lol).
Saturday was registration and male interview. I don't think I have ever seen a group in interview so prepared. All of the nine contestants were unbelievable in this category, congrats to all for you for a job well done. That night was the annual night of the reigning and then the review show. Tatiana chose to have a roast... "Really, no I mean really!" wow, it was so funny listening to all of Jonathan’s friends let him have it. It was a great way to start the night in review. Joining us that evening were my MGA sisters Catia Lee Love and Nicole Dubois along with my sista’ Kofi. We all lived the moment and made great memories!
Miss Gay Maryland has won prelim of the year many times, it is easy to see why. The hard work put in by Roger Dimick, the staff of the Hippo, the formers and the contestants is what makes this pageant so grand. But, even all of this put together does not compare to the contestants and the heart they have for the title. It reminded me of when I competed and the love I have for the system. The judges again had their work cut out for them as Treasure Revlon, Jasmine Marks, Jada B. Douglas, Chi Chi Ray Colby and Sue Nami fought for their placements. Congratulations to Sue Nami MGMD 09’ and Chi Chi Ray Colby for receiving your ticket to Miss Gay America. A special thank you to Chuck Bowers and Roger Dimick for making me feel at home-I can't wait to come back!
As I write to you each month I get to share with you experiences along my journey as Miss Gay America. This is a very special part for me because I hope that you can one day get a chance to write this very same letter. It’s hard work to compete and although things may not pan out as you would have liked, there is an unknown story that will one day make sense-until then, it is just unknown. So in times of being unsure remember "There's always gonna be another mountain, I'm always gonna want to make it move, always gonna be an uphill battle, sometimes I'm gonna have to lose. Aint about how fast I get there, aint about what's waiting on the other side- it’s about the climb"
Until next time,

July 2009
“A feeling, deep pleasure or satisfaction derived from one's own achievements… The achievements of those with whom one is closely associated, or from qualities or possessions that are widely admired.” These statements are known as Pride! I have found thru my experiences in life that unless you are proud of yourself in every way, there is no reward. One must pick themselves from fallen dreams and still be proud that they attempted to jump. This past month we celebrated Pride! Pride means so many things to so many people. One may be proud to be who they are and one may be proud to call someone a friend. With this said, to be proud is to not have prejudices… it is to welcome all, regardless of differences. This past month I found myself questioning things that I have to be proud of… only because of the unfamiliar territory that I was in. With this being said, I put the experience in my bag of knowledge and have used it to better myself as a proud individual. This year has been one of the busiest and exhilarating years of my life. I find my self in a different place every week and a different situation too… Trying to make it the best year ever and I know that I could not get thru it without being humble! This is the one thing that I have learned about myself this year as Miss Gay America. In so many places there are so many people who are great at what they do. This is the fire that makes me want to meet new people (pick their brains) and let them know that yes I am Miss Gay America but also, I am a person (with or with out a crown). I treat people as I would like to be treated... Although I just didn’t learn life lessons this past year, I also find myself putting them into play more than ever because you can't ever demand respect… you have to earn it, and for this I am proud to be your Miss Gay America and strive to daily, earn your respect!
Celebrating Pride, I was on my way to Orlando for Florida 's own Gay Day's. I was so excited to spend a long weekend in the beautiful state to celebrate the diversity of the country. I was the special guest performer at the annual Gay Day's pageant! This event was started a few years ago and is a kick off for the weekends festivities! What made this weekend even better is that I got to spend it with my good sister Coco Montese and her husband Alfi! As I arrived at the hotel we were in typhoon rains only to find out that the hotel had been out of electricity since the morning. OMG, I have never seen so many wet gays in my life, waiting outside because the fire marshall would not allow anyone inside until the power was restored. Mind you that myself and Miss Webster got right in… LOL. Cocowas giving up the title of Miss Gay Days and had me there as her guest! The experience was unforgettable and so memorable too. We then were booked at club Naugico and had a fabulous time performing with the beautiful Esme Russel, Iman and Alicia Markstone. The girls were so sweet. Thank you to all for making me feel so welcomed… I truly had a great time and I hope I can join you again.
Back on the plane to Kansas City only to find myself leaving again in a day for the fabulous state of Oklahoma for the Miss Gay Oklahoma America pageant and the Miss Southern Elegance America pageant. I was so excited for this trip because my sisters live there. I have been blessed with so many friends that live in the state of OK. Also, a little nervous because I was staying at the Habanna Inn..... Wow what an experience… and I'll never forget it! LOL. The first night of the festivities was the review show and I sat out to watch and hang out. It was so fun watching, for the first time, Aunt Tillie dress and perform. For those of you that don’t know who I’m talking about, please ask for her at Miss Gay America this year… She is a wealth of knowledge when it comes to the system and I might add, so fun too! The promoters of the Miss Gay Oklahoma America pageant are Catia Lee Love, Stephen (Pure Chocolate), Tabitha Taylor and Tillie Lane . Do they ever have their stuff together! It was a complete joy to be with the group all weekend long. Mind you, that the contestants were a treat also… Hilary Stewart, Vicki Dillard, Ally Lenee, Chantel Sterling, Alanna Paige, Kyra, Shantel Mandalay, Anita Ryder, Biancia LeBlanc, Samantha West, Tamia, Loleai Paige, Unique Paige and Alysha Brooks all did a beautiful job. Adrienne Fischer was giving up the title and her opening number was exquisite, ending with us both paying tribute to Wicked! Thanks gal for including me… it was a honor to share the stage with you all! Congratulations to Shantel Mandalay, as after eight years for competing, she captured her dream and was crowned as Miss Gay Oklahoma America 2009, and her first alternate Samantha West! Thank you to Phillip and the staff of Angles, Adrianna, Sarah Lewis, Tessa Traxler, Mikki, Sarah Molina, James and the Todds. A Special thank you to John Bebee for the outstanding painting of Andy Worhals Wicked Witch! It its hung with great pride that I have a friend like you! Thank you to all for making great memories!
Well one more stop before going home again for just one day… My next prelim was Miss Gay Southern Elegance America and it was also held in OKC at the beautiful Show Lounge Boom. Mark and Jamie are the new promoters of the pageant. We could not ask for sweeter gentleman! The pageant was graced with three wonderful contestants. Adrienne Fischer, Bianca LeBlanc and Sally Sparkles... and they were not playing games. The pageant was very entertaining… there may have only been three contestants but they all brought their “A” game. It was wonderful to get to work with Victoria Weston, Zia, Tatianna Voche', Sue Nami and the newest former Lala LaRue. Congratulations To Sally Sparkles, the newly crowned Miss Southern Elegance America and first alternate Adrienne Fischer, both on their way to MGA!! Thanks to Brett (Kitty Bob Aimes) for allowing us to use your beautiful showroom.
So I'm back home to squeeze two weeks of hair clients into one day! LORD, am I crazy! My next venture is to the hot hot city of Phoenix for the Miss Gay Arizona America pageant. I got to see people that I have not seen in years and it was a great trip down memory lane… the people couldn't be any nicer! The pageant was wrapped up into two days, It went by so quickly. Daniel, Paul and Warren did a fantastic job putting on the event. The contestants were Naomi St. James, Afeelya Bunz, Candi Colee, Vivika D'Angelo, Diva, TC Taylor, Patricia Mason, Ebonae Shane, KikiVermont and Celebrity Starr. The promoters whipped the pageant right into place. Tori Steele, Angela Dodd, Amanda Bury, Mikaila Kay, Bunny Fufu, Phaedra, Barbara Seville, Mya McKenzie and Sache Van Cartier’ were some of the formers, in attendance, supporting the pageant. It was great to work with you all. Congratulations to TC Taylor, the new Miss Gay Arizona America and first alternate Celebrity Starr, for receiving your ticket to MGA! Thanks to the people of AZ for welcoming me with open arms!!
I want to take a little time to thank the people who have been so great to work with this month. These individuals are the ones that have been selected to find our next symbols on the preliminary level. They are also under the influence of me, being Miss Gay America and are an extension of what I bring to this system. A special thank you to Charity Case, Spencer May, Roger Dimick, Travis Vaughn, Jonathan Kinder, Nichole Dubois, Tillie Lane, Victor Clay, Shane Broce, Kenneth Blake, Mikaila Kay, Alison Vincent, Kat Hartmann and Tajma Hall for all of your time and efforts in helping select such a wonderful group of competitors!
Wrapping up the month already does not seem to be possible. I have been so many places in such a short amount of time that I am losing track of all time. One thing that is so funny to me is that I have made friends with the workers at the airport (go figure) but it makes it easy when they already know what’s in the bag… LOL I have one more trip before this month ends and it is to St. Louis pride! I am so excited that I get to attend the festival in the city that I won the title of Miss Gay America. I am looking forward to spending time with L&T and my St. Louis sisters. As I stated early on in this letter, no matter where you are in life's journey we always have something to be proud of!

Victoria DePaula, Miss Gay America 2009
August 2009
Greetings my friends... I am so excited to be in production rehearsal for Miss Gay America 2010. I cannot believe the time has already arrived! The feeling is bitter sweet in a way I can’t describe- not traveling every week to amazing places all over the USA, not getting “dolled” up every weekend to partake in stunning shows, but on the other hand, I am excited about joining the sisterhood of the former “Miss Gay Americas” and supporting the contestants as they fulfill their dreams of becoming Miss Gay America. In my experience of being MGA I find myself so emotional sitting alongside the judges watching the girls compete, while in my head I’m thinking “this was me for the past eight years”! It is mind boggling to experience the full circle of winning and fulfilling the duties of being the Symbol of Excellence. Although my reign is not over, I have grown so much already as a person, performer and an administrator and if my last months are as beautiful as the past I will be ecstatic for life! I look forward to learning and growing more and more each day as I complete my journey.
July started off with a bang-no pun intended! I was back in St. Louis for Miss Gay Mid-West. What a great contest it was! I got to spend quality time with Miss Alana Steel and finally got the chance to bond with her. We had a great time laughing and carrying on about everything! It was a pure joy spending the evening with her. She had a wonderful step down and I wish her all the luck in whatever comes her way. The promoter of the pageant, Joe Bradley and I have known each other for years now. He is so dedicated to the art of female impersonation and is a staple in the MGA system. I would like to take a moment to thank him for all he has done; he has been there many times with words of encouragement and sends special cards year round-thank you for being a truly treasured friend! The pageant was nothing short of entertaining- Summer Breeze, Kitty Litter and Jade Sinclair fought it out to the last minute. The judges were Kirk Nelson, Dominique Sanchez, Keith Moore, Erika Leigh Foster and the owner of The Complex, Howard Meyer. Thanks to all of you for being so great at what you do, it was a pleasure working with you all, especially with Howard for opening up his bar for Miss Gay Midwest! It was wonderful to get the opportunity to work with formers Melinda Ryder, Dieta Pepsi and Vicki Valentino. Special congratulations to Jade Sinclair for capturing the title and Kitty Litter First Alt.-welcome back to the MGA system Kitty!
Just a couple of days later I arrived in PA for Miss Gay Pennsylvania 2009. WOW is all I have to say. I was so impressed with this state as well as the pageant. The kindness overflowed from the time I arrived to the time I left. It was so nice to see the true love of our art form! The line-up was endless with professional and passionate Formers including Tequila Daniels, Kitty Mame Dietrick, Lequitcha Rodriguez, Poison, Morgan Wells, Rebbecca Finn and Joanna Blunt. Also in attendance was MGA 2006 Nichole DuBois, MGA 1998 Maya Montana and Tatiyanna Voche. The weekend was full of fun and entertainment. The pageant was held at Club Liquid; the owners Tim and Jeff could not be any more on the top of their game. They were so sweet and worked their behinds off- I don’t think they ever stopped, but they made sure that everything was at its best. Thanks for allowing the festivities in your club; it would be a true honor to get to come back. The pageant was loaded with contestants with the dream of becoming MGPA. Bianca De Monet, Shatara, Jamayka Stephyns, Desiree, Sofonda Cox, Scarlet Feva, Aurora Fontaine, Electra Fearce St. James, Ashley Lynn, Salsa Caliente, Lady Tabitha, Madelyne DeDa, Guadalope Del Fuego and Angelica were team players all weekend long, I was blessed to have met them all! To Vicki Dominatrix- it was so nice getting to know you! Keep the faith and follow your dreams, you are a wonderful person. One person I am saving for last and that is Miss Michelle Leigh Sterling the Promoter of MGPA. I was so impressed with how she has taken this prelim and made it what it is today- it was nothing short of FABULOUS! The contestants, formers as well as spectators have nothing but exquisite things to say about Miss Michelle and you can add me to that list! We are so lucky to have wonderful promoters that are not focused on their own success but the success of others. I was grateful that I got to work with Michelle and would like to thank her for the inspiration she gave me. Thanks for everything (earrings too) you are truly a chapter in my book! Congratulations to Electra Fearce St.James for capturing the title her first time and to Aurora Fontaine First Alt. I wish you both the best of luck at Nationals!
So I'm now in the middle of the month wondering where the time went, and still cannot give you an answer. I found myself arriving in Columbus, Ohio for Miss Gay Ohio. My plane had been delayed for a bit and I was missing the annual formers dinner but I did finally arrive (in style of course). I knew from the moment I walked in the door that this would be a trip I would never forget. I was presented with a cup when I arrived that was hot pink and said “Miss Gay Ohio” on one side and on the other “Victoria DePaula”- how cute it is and the contents in it were delicious too (LOL)! Aron and Nick hosted the party, as of course, the promoters. After the party they took me on a tour of the night life. I must say how impressed I was with the city as well as the gay lifestyle- who would have thought Columbus would be a Mecca for everything! The pageant up to this point has been the largest contestant base yet. Bella Dolce, Mercedes Marie Anderson, Honey Below, Rhoda Horse, Maquaila Jaa, Holly Below, Brionna Brooks, Elegance Black Lourdes, Delta Blake, Erica LaRue, Natasha Styles, Madison Avenue, Daray Lorez, Zena Kay Diamonte, Bitsy Spider, Symphony Alexander, Rachel Torrez-Kolbe and Destiny Fate were vying for the job of Miss Gay Ohio and it was close! They gave the judges a run for their money. Lita Mannon, Nina West, Alex Morgan, Trisha Hart and Virginia West were right on with what they were looking for- it was an amazing panel. A special thank you to Nina West, National Entertainer of the year for supporting our system, it was more than everything getting to know you! The pageant was full of events from start to finish with catered lunches, the review show and a fabulous party at former MGOA Miss Sonja Ross' house. There were also other formers I had the pleasure of befriending-Melissa Ross, Erika Evans, Heather Lane, Tiffany Taylor, Paige Passion, Sashay Lorez, Erica Rae O'Hara, Vivi Velure, Jade and Darah Landon. Let’s not forget the newest former… Hellin Bed! She is a breath of fresh air- love you gal! The pageant was held at Axis and it was truly amazing. Thanks to the staff for all of your efforts in making a successful event, thanks also goes to Maria and my newest girls Tonya and Christina. Also to Aron and Tiffany thanks for all of your help over the years and for making me feel so welcomed in your city- you are truly what makes me proud to be MGA! Last but not least, congratulations to Symphony Alexander Love for capturing your dream and to Brionna Brooks for letting the kids have it! Can’t wait to see you both at Nationals!
So the time passed right by and here I am at the end of July with one more pageant to finish before August hits full force. This pageant has a special place in my heart because it is my home state! Being a former Miss Gay Missouri and getting the honor to walk the stage as Miss Gay America was a feeling I will forever hold in my heart. I realized that many people have reached for their dreams but for some reason or another it hasn’t happened for them yet. I stand before you as a truly blessed person who is so thankful and honored to have had my dreams become reality. As I arrived in Springfield, MO I was thinking back to the year that I competed and how much that year prepared me for MGA. I guess our state is one of the lucky ones, because for the last several years it has been the largest prelim in the MGA system. With that said, it gives the winner a chance to experience what MGA would be like but on a smaller scale. Without this endeavor I feel like I would not be where I am today, so my heart lies deep with this contest! The pageant was packed with twenty five contestants striving to be MGM. Scarlett Rivers, Kimi Laurel, Dayonna Hilton, Adara Starr, Mariah Candy,Deja Brooks, Tajma Stetson, Victoria Von Dutch, Crystal Lace, Bianca Bliss, Kate Spade, Noel Winters, Kyla Breeze, Chocolate DeMornay, Devon Blaine, LaDreama Funn, Valari Knyte, Adaria Andrews, Tasha Romaine, Musica Malone, Trixie Larue, Bianca Hilton, Nikki Stevens, Dee Dee Cupps and Erica Foxx, all made me very proud and glad that I had already won so I would not have to compete against these talented and fierce ladies! LOL! It was so wonderful to have my mother with me the entire weekend, along with my best friend Eddie and good friend John. Sparkle Iman, Melinda Ryder Sasha Nicole, Athena Voche, Jade Sinclair, Loretta Martin and Promoter Tumara Mahorning… all embraced our friendship and I cherish the bond between us- it was a beautiful experience. I would like to thank the judges Terry Eason, Desiree DeMornay, Nicole DuBois MGA2006, Sasha Nichole and Loretta Martin for taking the time to select our next symbol. To Tumara- I don't even know where to begin. You have done so much for me over these last few years that I don’t know how I’ll ever repay you! You are truly a driving force that inspires me to always be my best. I could not ever ask for a better person to have come into my life. Thank you for all that you do and for the beautiful portrait that now hangs in my home, the jewelry, crowns and our beautiful duet dresses. You and your family have been so instrumental in my personal success and I thank you from the bottom of my heart, your pageant is a complete reflection of you! You should definitely be proud of what you bring to the table because I am surely proud of you! The MGA system has been graced with a valuable asset and that is you! Congratulations to Miss Gay Missouri 2009 Erica Foxx and 1st alternate Tajma Stetson, both on the way to MGA!
To all of the readers of this article I would like to personally thank you for the support of our wonderful system, without you, dreams wouldn’t turn into reality, and the stars would still be just out of reach. I am glad to have this opportunity to let you in on my life, which is Miss Gay America.
Until next time!
Victoria DePaula, Miss Gay America 2009
Victoria DePaula, Miss Gay America 2009
September 2009
Well here we are again. It has been such a pleasure letting you all in on my life adventures this past year. It is now September and I really can’t tell you where all the time has gone. To think that I have one more official letter to write makes my stomach hurt!
One thing that I have learned is to enjoy life to the fullest because time rushes away so quickly. As I look back one year ago, like you, I was busy preparing for Miss Gay America, putting the finishing touches on my competition package. Attention to detail is very important in the MGA system. Please review the category descriptions and what the judges will be looking for at nationals. It is all there in black and white. Giving away points that you could have prevented is always heart breaking for any contestant. When it comes down to the national stage… it is what sets us all apart and as you all know... the outcome is always very close!
I would love to let you in on my mind set as I went into competition with last year. Over the years competing, winning had always been the top priority and you should go into competition with that mindset. However sometimes, stress and your reputation take over the best of you and pride steps in the way. One thing that was missing was being able to have FUN! I would get so wrapped up in thinking that I had to walk away as a winner that I would forget the foundation of being on stage and that is to have fun! Going into to last year I had told myself that If I didn't walk away a winner, that it was ok and that I would move on to the next chapter in my life. I didn’t let this out to the general public because I did not want anyone to think that I was bitter, and I wasn't, but I believe you have to be in the right place in your life and have the right mindset to let new things happen.
I realized that competition did not define me as a person or as an entertainer which, I have to admit that this was the first year I realized that for myself. My goal was to compete to the best of my ability and not to worry about the outcome. I didn't watch much of the competition last year because I didn't want the added stress of other contestants doing a great job in their categories. I focused on the friendships I have had along the way and the honor of developing those friendships over the past eight years and having the time of my life.
I knew what I was there to do and knew that I would be ready to win if it was meant to happen. So I treated the week as if it was a vacation. I enjoyed every aspect of my endeavor. I do believe that things happen for a reason and looking back I am so proud to have had the practice over the past eight years which have molded me into Miss Gay America.
I am proud of my journey and the outcome has been everything I could have ever hoped for! I hope that all of you have realized that just because you have the crown of Miss Gay America, it is up to you to make it what it is and the excellence behind the crown. I wear my crown with the utmost respect, knowing all of the history, promoters and competitors throughout the years of MGA and thank all of you for your continued support to the Miss Gay America Pageant System.
I started the month of August with one last weekend off from travel to enjoy family and friends. It was so nice to catch up with life in Kansas City among the people closest in my heart. We grilled outside and enjoyed the pool all day laughing non-stop. It was nice to be able to share my experience with them in detail and watching the expressions on their faces was sometimes priceless. That same weekend I was off to OKC for a photo shoot with Miki from Shutterbug photography along with Miss Samantha West. It was a blast taking new photos one last time in my crown. I will also say that anyone one who may need some great promo or headshots done should contact Miki. My experience was memorable and unforgettable. Thanks TJ for all your help! I look forward to more good times together. I am so lucky to have you both in my life.
So now we are back to craziness! For some reason I thought that I was leaving for my next trip in the evening so I had booked just about a full day of work at the salon. Oops!! I was wrong. I was leaving late morning, which meant I would not be able to see all of my clients. I had to reschedule them with no times available because I am booked thru MGA. It was a little challenging but I got it worked out with the help of one of my stylists…..thanks JoJo for helping a Gal out!! So after I dealt with this, it was now time to leave for Washington DC for my homecoming!
Thursday night was a night on the town in DC! Myself, Blake Macon, Aron Harvey and Robert York embarked on visiting some of DC's finest establishments and one that clearly sticks out in my mind the most was….Secrets! LOL! OMG....I have never seen something of this sort in my whole life! I will never forget the fun times we shared that night. People are so friendly in DC. I don't think I have ever done so many shows in a row! It started out with Ziegfeld’s for the Friday night show under the direction of Mr. Jon Parks and what a blast it was! I got to entertain with Miss Kristina Kelly, Catia Lee Love, Destiny B. Childs, Regina Jozet Adams and Billie Ross. It was an honor and pleasure to share the stage with such great entertainers.
Saturday was pageant time! Robert York did an amazing job putting together Miss Gay DC America 2009! The morning started off with registration where I got to brief the judges Kate Michael, Mike Wynne, Brian Alexander, Khori Ross and my MGA sister Linda Carrero (Omar Reyes) along side the contestants - Jessica Jade, Jada B. Douglas and Karyn Thomas. It was a blast and the hotel board room really made me feel like something special! Lol. It was a busy day with lunch following interview and the night was even better! I walked into Town Danceboutique and it was decorated with streamers and balloons just like a high school or college homecoming. It was priceless! The pageant was incredible and very professional! The contestants provided us with quality entertainment in every category! Congratulations to my little sister Jessica Jade for capturing the title and Karyn Thomas for getting her ticket back to MGA. You both made me proud and I can’t wait to see you soon! I was also very proud of Jada B. Douglas. Over the past year I have had the pleasure of adding a wonderful new friend to my life! Robert York was such a positive role in me becoming MGA as well as Blake Macon too! It really goes to show you what MGA is all about and I’m glad I have had the honor to experience it! Thank you for my proclamation from the DC Mayor’s office as well as my beautiful (and original) art work of me being crowned! Thanks for all your attention to detail…. it is amazing! I had another surprise at MGDC and that was the opportunity of getting to work with my MGA sister Luscious. Thanks for being a part of my step-down. It was nice working with you and I hope to see you again sometimes soon! I would also like to mention my DC sisters and thank them for their involvement: Monet Dupree, Ashley Bannks and Kristina Kelly! Thanks to the staff and management of Town for letting us showcase the Miss Gay DC pageant in your beautiful bar!
The show must go on and it did as we made a special appearance at Freddie’s Beach Bar the next evening! This restaurant/bar is so fun and the peeps love them some drag at Freddie’s! The show was full of local performers including: Destiny B. Childs, Tattiyana Voche, Regina Jozet Adams, Ashlee Jozet Adams, Shelby Bottoms, Ophelia Bottoms, LaCountress Farington and Raquel Savage! Thank you Freddie for having me, it is always a pleasure performing in your bar! Sunday was a double booking back to back and we kept on with entertaining the audience at Ziegfeld’s for the MGDCA afterglow review show staring the formers with the addition of Jessica Jade and Karyn Thomas and Vickii Voxx who celebrated her twenty year anniversary. Thanks to Allen Carroll and Jon Parks for hosting another incredible night! Whew! We had one more night to go. Monday night was held at Omega. This was a fun place for myself, Catia Lee Love, Coco L. Blackwell, Vicki Voxx, Rivera Leone, Isis Deverreoux, Yoo-Mei and the wonderful Big Daddy who hummed a special diddy of a tune! It was great to meet all of you and I cant wait to come back and visit again for more good times!
So I flew home on Tuesday and left again on Thursday for Miss Gay Tennessee. William Carleton and Darryl Rodgers did a wonderful job putting on this pageant! Hadley Sinclair, Anita Cocktail, Tatiyannia Star and Pat McCooter worked their little hearts out competing for the title.. Larry Tyger, Will Pappas, Barry Guarno and Misty Meaner had their hands full judging this pageant! They all did an outstanding job! Congratulations to Anita Cocktail for achieving her dream and to Pat McCooter for rocking the house down especially for your first time! I enjoyed myself at the pageant and loved working with Miss Pebbles, Mercedes Alexander, Anastacia Beverhousen and the beautiful Miss Ivy White! A special thanks to Mike Divoky for being so kind and helpful!! I look forward to working again with William and Daryl for Miss Gay Heartland! Thanks to everyone for making my visit to Memphis so special.
So I returned home from the club around three in the morning, re-packed all the bags and slept for two hours because I had a road trip sponsored by William and Daryl to the homeland of MGA in Little Rock , Arkansas . This was such a special trip for me because my journey started there at the Discovery Theatre stage. The year was 1999 and VD was brand spanking new. Lol! It only took one time of watching and competing for MGA and I was hooked! So being able to step on that stage again as MGA was the best feeling ever! Not only was it great to be back in Little Rock but it was also wonderful seeing Mr. Norman Jones/ Norma Kristie the man who inspired me to become MGA. This was the icing on the cake for me and I am so proud to be able to wear my crown in the steps and years dedicated by Norman . As life moves on, change happens and change is great but I can never forget the encouragement and drive he gave me personally. I remember thinking back wanting to be like him in so many ways but one way in particular was hoping that one day, that maybe, I could own MGA.
The pageant was remarkable under the direction of Spencer May (Kelly Cruiz) and Dennis Harris (Debbie Taunts). Registration was one of the highlights to me because I remember sitting in those very chairs at MGA and listening to the reigning MGA and all of the formers talk and educate the contestants, wishing that someday I would get to do the same. Thankfully I got my chance.
The contestants were so wonderful. Even better that they all strived to be and become Miss Gay Arkansas! Felisha Winners, Mya Alexander, Charnay Iman, Cassadine, Roxie Starlight Wolfchase, Zia Dior, Veronica Duvall, Christina Saxton, Dedra Windsor Walker, Dimond Rose, Makalyla Blake, Sasha Harrison, Leah Iman Devori and Britney Page were on top of the world looking down with their eyes on the prize! It was fabulous! Back stage was just the same. The formers do such an incredible job helping everyone! April Scott, Raven St. James, Vicki Valentine, Missy Klein, Kamrin Michaels, Megan Michaels, Alexis LaRue and the newest Stephanie Richards were so welcoming and real! We had a great time together! I also got to meet a wealth of knowledge to the MGA system with Mr. Ron Standridge. It was so wonderful listening to him talk about MGA over the years. I hope that our paths cross again. Thanks for all of your words of encouragement! I must say that the judges had a hard job. Blake Hardcastle, Connie Jo Smith (Love You), Jamie Willams, John Davis and Melvan Beavers were all professionals at what they were there to do. In the end Christina Saxton, after seventeen years, captured her dream of becoming MGAA and Zia Doir was the first alternate. Congrats to both of you. It was a pleasure getting to know you both!
So now we are at the end of the month again! You know what they say "time flies when your having fun" and let me tell you that is not a lie! I had one more stop before my letter was due and that was to the HOT HOT state of Louisiana ! I felt like I was Truvy….. working away collecting everything but money and men! Lol!! Just kidding but I could not resist to throw in some Steel Magnolia humor. It was so nice to be in the true south. Sweet tea was everywhere and I think they thought I was crazy asking for unsweetened, but you know a girl must watch her figure before nationals. It is so nice to have new promoters join our wonderful system. Big Daddy Delorean (Tommy) and Dominique DeLorean have their heart in the right place. They were outstanding as first time promoters! The pageant was held at Olympus owned by Dan and Erick. This place had the best air conditioner I had ever experienced! It was freezing!! That’s a good thing in VD’s eyes! The bar also had tons of room making it so comfortable for the contestants as well as the formers. It was so nice to be treated with southern hospitality at its finest! The pageant had ten lovely contestants. Ambrosia McNeil, Miss Gia, Cassidy St. James, Bambi Bexter, Tami Tarmac, Arilyyn Roberts, Mercedes Ellis Loreal, Marsheya St. Clair, Tori Taylor and Chicka La Rouge were true divas! It was so fun watching all of them get ready for the battle of the crown! They were all professional, friendly gals and I had a blast cutting up with them! The judges were great to work with as well. Richard Lane , Robert Harper, Edward Allen and my MGA sister Rachael Erikks were on the ball! It was a great experience and the outcome was superb. It was so enjoyable working with former MGLA's Jayda Alexander, Maya McNeil, Chelsea DeLorean Divine and Anastacia Davenport. Congratulation to Cassidy St. James for joining the sisterhood of Miss Gay Louisiana and to Bambi Bextor for placing first alternate on her first time! Best of luck to you both at nationals! Oh and I'll be glad to drink your sweet tea in St. Louis ! I plan to have a White Castle too! Lol!
Well I must say that it has been a pleasure writing these letters. The only problem is that it will end in about a month! I hope that you have all enjoyed your experience this year as much as I have! It has been so rewarding to travel the country and watch first hand pageantry at its best and finest! Thank you all for reading this letter and supporting the Miss Gay America pageantry system. Remember behind every success is effort... Behind every effort is passion... Behind every passion is someone with the courage to try!
Until next time!

Victoria DePaula, Miss Gay America 2009
October 2009
When you wish upon a star… it makes no difference who you are. When you wish upon a star… your dreams do come true. As we all know, this is one of the infamous lines from the wonderful world of Disney- I am a true example of this. It has been just short of one year since my dream came true. So much has happened in this year; I have traveled to twenty three prelims across the country and still have three more to go. I have been away from my home more than I have been in it, but yet, I will not complain! I have learned so much from so many different people who have encouraged me to be unique, but to cherish the many things we have in common. As I look ahead to MGA 2010 it has been difficult to process the fact that the end of what I consider “a year to remember” is approaching quickly! It’s kind of scary to think that my journey is over in the sense that I will not compete on a national level anymore. I have always been accustomed to preparing for competitions that now I feel as if I do not have anything to look forward to, however I know that is not the case. The thrill, challenge and anticipation of competing for the title may be gone, but the honor, happiness and feeling of pride will never leave me. This has been the best year of my life and I am saddened to see it go but I look forward to working alongside L&T, as well as all the formers, but to think that my crown and tiara will now sit in their showcase makes me want to start all over again!
I have had the opportunity to talk to all of you and witness first hand your desire to become MGA. It is a surreal feeling to be someone who people ask direction from. Every one of you have been an honor to not only work with, but witness first hand, the talent you possess. I love seeing the ambition and drive in all of you, it makes me feel proud to be MGA and secure in the fact that my new sister will continue to take our system to new levels of excellence. You all have prepared competition packages that get bigger and better every year- you have raised the bar for female impersonation competition.
Miss Gay America 2010 will mark Thirty Eight Years of Excellence. It is the oldest pageant in the U.S. history of female impersonation, and in the world today we face many different options in life, we are now free to express ourselves in whatever way we choose. Our country has come such a long way in nearly forty years! As this year has passed I have sat in on nearly one hundred and fifty male interviews. One of the most frequent questions asked was “What makes MGA different from all of the other pageants”? Although every contestant that answers this question has a different answer, one theme remained the same: Miss Gay America prides itself on the fact that “boys are boys” and female impersonation is an art. I feel sometimes that because we are so structured, many people feel as if they can’t express themselves in our system-this is not true! It takes a person who has the knowledge to be creative but while upholding the rules and regulations of our system. In no way does our system limit us to be great entertainers because we are men. It is actually the hardest competition to win because we still have to follow the general rule of illusion and the fact that we create something that really isn’t there. I applaud you for keeping the original art form alive, as well as setting the standard of what female impersonation is. The sky is the limit!
My travels have been so exciting and with each trip I am more and more amazed that I am living the dream of being MGA. Several months into my role as MGA, (before the craziness started-LOL) I thought maybe I would be ready to give it up when it came down to the end- I find that was just wishful thinking. Unfortunately, I was unable to fill everyone in on my last trip in August, so I have added it to this month’s article. And what an amazing trip it was! I got to travel to “The Queen City”- I know, how ironic was it for Miss Gay America to land in such a place? The city was Charlotte, North Carolina and it was spectacular! I was greeted at the airport by Michael Wynn (The Man in the Red Hat) and we were off to the mall to shop while only making one quick stop at Starbucks along the way. After shopping for a while we headed back to the hotel to meet up with the promoter of Miss Gay Mid-East, Michael Rhinehart. With him was my newest girlfriend Della, we hit it right off! We all put the judges’ books together and enjoyed the time. That night we went out for a bit to see the venue where the pageant was going to be held- OMG can I say beautiful! The newly remodeled night club Scorpio was exquisite! I have always heard so much about it and it was a pleasure working there the whole weekend. Friday marked the day of competition and there were four lovely contestants, which all did an amazing job! Kristina Kelly, Crystal Chambers, China Collins and Tatianna Voche’ worked their tails off for this competition. Dominique Sanchez, Maya Montana, Brian Alexander, Michael Wynn and Trent Thomas did a lovely job judging. Tatianna Voche’, who rocked it out, was crowned Miss Gay Mid East and China Collins placed First Alt. All of the contestants did an amazing job and this was one competition I would not have wanted to be in-LOL!
This pageant was special to me because I got to work with one of my MGA sisters that I haven’t seen in a long time- Tiffany Bonet’ was back and I was so ecstatic see her! Back in the days of competition, she was one of the gals that inspired me; something about her voice on the mic has always brought me great joy. Also in attendance were my sisters Rachael Erriks and Luscious and of course, the china doll Mya Montana- it was amazing to work alongside of them. Another gal that graced us with her presence was Miss Gay DC Jessica Jade, she also rocked the house down. It was great to work with so many people that weekend, Tiffany Storm, Coti Collins, Emery Starr, Brooklyn Dior (thanks for the ring), Gypsy Starr, Kasy King and Jessica Rayenes Starr- thanks for being so welcoming! Thanks to Basil, Bret and all of the staff of Scorpio for making my trip memorable- I can’t wait to be back for Miss Gay North Carolina. Miss Della, thanks for being a part of the week it was truly a great time getting to know you and becoming friends (thanks for the tickets to The Color Purple third row seat style) -it was wonderful and I thank you from the bottom of my heart. Last, but not least, I would like to thank Mike Rhinehart for his support this year of my reign. Mike has traveled to nearly ten prelims this year supporting me, as well as the MGA system. It is great having you in the system not only as a promoter, but as a friend.
On Monday I returned home for a work week of both the landscaping company and the salon. It’s hard to believe that after November 1st I will have nothing to do but bang some hair, it’s going to be a bit shocking because landscaping will be winding down for winter and MGA will be over. What will one do with all this time? LOL!
My next stop was to Quincy Illinois for the Miss Gay Illinois pageant, under the direction of Michael Klataske/ Jade Sinclair. It is so nice to see people so dedicated to the Miss Gay America system to the extent of contestants wanting to promote a pageant. This is not an easy task! The pageant included three lovely contestants: Mariah Candy, Lolita Popp and Diamond Champagne. The judges were Larry Tyger, Andy Lewis, Jason Staley, Stephen Rigg and Zane Redfern-thanks for your support and efforts in selecting Illinois' newest symbol. Congratulations to Mariah Candy, MGIA and Diamond Champagne First Alt. I wish you both the best of luck at nationals. It was also nice to see Miss Anita Mann- we have known each other for years! It was an honor to get to share the night with her. I was so happy to be a part of MGIA in its first steps of returning back to our system. I wish you the best of luck and hope that you take the pageant to new and exciting levels!
Being gone from home so much in the past year has made me feel a bit out of touch with my own city. So, the next prelim was one that I was looking forward to because it was in my own city. I was so excited to get to work as Miss Gay America in my own city so all of my “peeps” could see me in the official capacity as MGA. Miss Gay Tri-States was a fun pageant with four lovely contestants vying for the title; Déjà Brooks, Kate Spade, Fanta Cee and Tammy Tarmac had a throw down for the crown. Terry Eason, Mike Divoky, Loretta Martin, Mike Rinehart, and Jim Van did a wonderful job judging. Thanks to Reba, Belle and Brad for putting on a great event, your organization was key to your success! Thanks for my framed poster I will hang it with pride. Congratulations to Deja Brooks for capturing the title and to Kate Spade for placing first alt.-knock em’ dead girls at Nationals! Thank you Channing Larue for all of your help, I’m glad that you were there with me.
So the very next morning I was off to Springfield Missouri for the rebirth of Miss Gay Central States put on by our newest promoters Shane and Steve. It was in a lovely hotel ball room-way to go boys for putting on the Ritz! The cast was endless, including Tumara Mahorning, Robyn Hunter, Erika Leigh Foster, Krista Versace (judge), Mariah Candy and Catia Lee Love, who also served as the lead judge. Also judging were Monica Clay, Marney Rae Holiday and Latesea Moore. It was very enjoyable catching up with all the girls. The pageant included three lovely contestants; Nikki Stevens, Stephanie Lane and Victoria Von Dutch competed with confidence, I was extremely proud! Congrats to Nikki Stevens for becoming Miss Gay Central States 2009 and Victoria Von Dutch first alt. I hope you have a blast at Nationals. A special thank you to Shane and Steve for my beautiful jewelry, I will wear it with pride. A very special “thank you” goes to my friend Loreal for traveling with me-it was nice to sit in the passenger seat!
WOW! This month has truly been a busy one, I can’t believe that it is already the end of the month. The countdown to MGA 2010 is rapidly approaching! But, there was no time to dwell because I next found myself at Miss Gay Texas in Dallas. What a blast this prelim was! The pageant was held at the famous Rose Room which is a beautiful and perfect show bar. The girls in Dallas are so lucky to have a place like this to showcase their talents. The new promoters Tim Smith and Marcus Hood are heading the pageant in the right direction, it is always so nice to see new promoters putting great effort and paying attention to detail into their pageants. The contest included eleven contestants; Natasha Parson, Apen Tyler, Trecenia St. James, Lenze Serell, Alexiya Nycole Davenport, Riley Moore, The Contessa Piranha, Heather Skyy, Matie Madison, Onyx and Jordan Sinclair. The girls worked it out Texas Style! I also had the pleasure of working with Charity Case, Tara Dion, Claudia Foster, Sweet Savage, Josephine O’Hara, Valerie Lohr, Ashley Cole, Alyssa Edwards, Chanel and Lala Larue. The judges were Tasha Kohl, Alina Maletti, Raquel Chevalier, Nathaniel Shell and Doreen Rue. They had their job cut out for them and selected Onyx as Miss Gay Texas 2009 and Trecenia St. James first alt. -they both were amazing! I wish you the much success at Nationals. I would like to thank the city of Dallas for being so welcoming to me. A special thank you to Richard and the staff and management of S4 and the Rose Room for letting our pageant showcase in your venue. I hope to be back real soon!
So, the pageant ended about three in the morning and I had to be back at the airport at seven a.m. to head to Phoenix for Miss Gay Western States. I arrived and Mr. Kenneth Blake had the Starbucks in hand and I was grateful to receive some energy. The pageant was held at the Windham Hotel in downtown Phoenix. Wow- this place was incredible! I felt like a movie star in this venue! Two thumbs up guys for having your event in such a first class place.
The pageant was blessed with two contestants Sache’ Van Cartier and Dottie Pepper who decided they still wanted to battle it out for the crown. It was so nice to work with people I haven’t seen in a while like Truly Fabu, Alina Maletti, China Collins (who was the reigning), Angela Dodd, TC Taylor (MGAA), Maya Mackenzie, and Lucinda Holiday. The judges included: Mikalia Kay and Mark. A special thank you to Mary Ann and James for your help with the festivities. Congratulations to Kenneth and Lee Revelle for doing such an amazing job. We are truly honored to have you both in our system and look forward to working with you again in Las Vegas next year. Also, I would like to add that those of you who are inspiring to be MGA missed out on a great prelim as well as an awesome prize package! Congratulations so Sache’ who captured the title beautifully and to Dottie first alt. Let em’ have it at Nationals Gals!
The next morning I had to be up at six a.m. to catch my flight to Orlando for Miss Gay Florida. Thank goodness it was a four hour nonstop flight so I could catch up on some much needed rest-LOL! When I arrived I was greeted by the new promoter Will Pappas and we headed to the famous Parliament House Resort. The first night we attended the Tea Dance at the resort and lived the night right! The next morning it was time to gear up for Miss Gay Florida America; Monica Moore, Jalitza Fierce and Kinden all arrived with the will to win! The judges were Dominique Sanchez, Zena, Jay Taylor and Rais Jackson who all did a great job! It was nice to get to work with Coco Montrese, Chantel Reshae, Mercedes Alexander and Daphane Ferraro who I haven’t seen in years. Also, it was a highlight to get to work with Crystal Chambers, who was giving up her title. The opening production of Wicked was amazing! In the end, Monica Moore sealed the deal on the crown and Jalitza Fierce placed first alt.-great job ladies and we will see each other real soon.
Well, once again this month has quickly come to an end leaving only four prelims. I hope you all are enjoying your time preparing for MGA, it is going to be a blast to join together and celebrate another great year of pageantry. Remember that the sky is the limit and Miss Gay America is not a cookie cutter system! Use your knowledge, as well as the rules and regulations to bring our art form to the next level. Enjoy the moment and remember that “dreams do come true”.
Until next time,
Victoria DePaula MGA 2009

November 2009
Well it's hard to believe that more than a week has already flown by.
This past week I have often found myself reflecting on a wonderful year as well as a fantastic week of competition at MGA 2010. I was so amazed at how all of the contestants stepped up to the plate, making MGA 2010 one of the most exciting ever. My week was an emotional one. There were many reasons… but mainly because I enjoyed my year so much and that it was now time to move on to a new chapter in my life of Miss Gay America. It is so rewarding to see the promoters so involved and to also know that past promoters want to come back. The contestants were willing to learn and do their best and the new-bees anxiously waiting to become a part of our amazing system.
This is what competition is all about. Not the he said, she said of bitter people. I applaud every one for taking that extra step that makes MGA what it is and the legacy it leaves behind. I am proud to be a part of the family that we all create.
I arrived in St. Louis on Monday to relax and spend time with my sister Tumara Mahorning before the craziness started. We laughed and reminisced on the year as well as our friendship…all because of MGA. I am thankful to have people like him in my life. Tuesday rolled around quickly and I knew this was starting my final week as MGA 2009. It was time to start a week of a lifetime. I was so excited to have dinner with my two dads, Catia, BB (LOL) and the judges. It was wonderful getting to chat with all of them. After dinner, I was invited to join the orientation with the judges. I was like a kid in a candy store. This was one of the highlights for me because now I didn't have to wonder what went on behind those doors….I was now a part of it.
Every day brought new meanings to the emotions I was feeling. Seeing all of the contestants joking around and the formers acting crazy once again, validated why I wanted to be a part of MGA and the sisterhood.
Oh! I might add that just because I won didn't mean that my hotel room still wasn't a working sweat shop all week, (LOL) more than ever! Andy slaved away with the rhinestones and not only for me but also the judge’s badges and even a suit jacket with a shrine to VD on it. This is what home is in MGA. People working together to make the experience be the best it could be.
During the week I collected many gifts. I thank you all for thinking of me and making me feel special. Mike and Rodney, Joie (Tumara), Momma Fran, Loreal, Kirk and Bruce, Robert, Catia, Mark Martin, Joe Bradley and Larry & Terry. Your gifts of love are now in my home and I thank you all so much.
I would like to congratulate all of the contestants for displaying what female impersonation is all about. You all are winners and I hope you all are proud of your accomplishments. To my little sister Alyssa…I am so happy for you. I hope you have a year full of everything you ever wished MGA would be. Best of luck to you and know that I am here for you whenever you need me!
As you all know I hold MGA very close to my heart. It has been the most memorable time in my life. I hope that you all know that you have played a special role in my journey. I would like to say thank you for being with me until the end or as I would like to think and say…..the beginning.
Until next time!

December 2009
So, after all the excitement was over I realized I didn't attach my letter from the last few exhilarating weeks as Miss Gay America. So once again I get to post my final letter in The Excellence (as Miss G ay America 2009)- seems like you’re never going to get rid of me! Lol!
Greetings,
Wow! What a ride this has been! If you could only see my house you would die. Drag droppings everywhere, it is a mess but I have not stopped in the last month. I returned home from Florida on Monday and it was time to leave again. I was so excited because I got to return to the Queen City one more time for the 31st Annual Miss Gay North Carolina pageant. I arrived to the hotel driven by my Aunt Brooklyn. She was the liaison of the stars for the week. I opened up the door to find a huge circus poster above my bed with my newest headshot on it. It was beautiful! I knew right away that this was going to be everything and it truly was. The first night was my dear sister Tiffany Storms show, it was a blast getting to work with her and all of the girls. My Siamese twin for the year was also there, Catia, along with my other sister Rachael Erikks, but she had the night off!
Thursday marked the start of the greatest show on earth. I, alongside Victoria Parker lead the troops on their way to fight for the crown. Rachael Erikks, Sharde' Ross, Robert York, Jerry Vicks and Reba Lamkey-Knabe had a long week ahead of them in the search for the new Miss Gay North Carolina. Starla Davinci, Detra Panucci, Emory Starr, Jessica Raynes Starr, Cherries Jubilee, Nirobi, Gobriel Brooks , Aqua St. Mark, Tracy Stevens, Vaness Cottrell, Coco Chanel and Brianna Davis did an amazing job in their quest for the crown. I must say that this pageant had a plethora of people that were amazing! Brian Hemric, Terry Burris, Bret York, Greg Fulk, Mike Rhinehart, Tiffany Bonet and Maya Montana -we owe this group a huge thank you for making this pageant a success. I have to take a second to say” WOW”- it was the best opening I have ever seen. The circus had come to town and I got to be the Ring Leader it was a blast. Victoria , you did an amazing job- thanks for including me! A special congratulations goes out to Detra Panucci for capturing her dream and to Tracy Stephens for getting her ticket, as 1st alternate to Miss Gay North CarolinaAmerica .
My next stop was back to Memphis for Miss Gay Heartland. It is so nice being back there as the people are so kind. William Carleton and Darryl Rodgers did a great job promoting the pageant. It was so nice to get to work with the reigning Mya Alexander on her final night. Adria Andrews, Stephanie Lane , Alyssa Edwards, Mercedes Alexander and Anastasia Beverhousen worked it out. This was a tough one making it a difficult job for Larry Tyger, Pebbles, Mike Divoky, John Robinson and Heather Grant. Congratulations to Anastasia Beverhousen for winning and to Alyssa Edwards as 1st alternate. I wish I could have stayed longer, but I had to catch the plane at six in the morning, so after the pageant my two dads and I stayed up all night until it was time to go to the airport- it was fun! I arrived back in Kansas City , but had to go straight to St. Joe for the Miss Gay Kansas Pageant. This was held at one of the bars that I have my regular show at so it was nice to be back and see my peeps that I haven't seen in a year. The pageant was blessed with Cypress , Sparkle Iman and Jamie Ray Downs. The judges were Kirk Nelson, Catia Lee Love, Reba Lamkey-Knabe, Micheal Leffering and Daren Kuhn; it was a great time performing with all of them. Also in attendance were Melinda Ryder, Loreal and Loretta Martin. Congratulations to Sparkle Iman and to her first alternate Cypress . Best of luck to you both at Nationals!
Well, there comes a time where all good things must come to an end so this brings me to my last prelim as Miss Gay America. I was happy to be back in Columbus , Ohio for Miss Gay Mid Atlantic- I love this place! I got to hang with my girls Tonia and Christina; we ate and shopped all day. The first night I was booked with the fabulous Nina West, Virginia West and Sonia Ross at Union and the Axis what a great time and amazing show. The next morning was the big day; Kristina Kelly and Natasha Styles were ready to take on pageantry. Mike Righnheart, David Cullison, Nina West, Paige Passion and Erika Evens still had their work cut out for them with just two contestants. I would like to say thank you to Aron Aranda and Nick Rose for being great promoters as well as friends, it was a pleasure working with you both. And the winner goes to… Kristina Kelly and first alternate Natasha Styles! Congrats girls on being so wonderful- knock em’ dead at Nationals!
Well, it’s weird being finished with prelims, now it’s time to finish preparing for Nationals. I am now in rehearsals just about every night for the opening production and I am hopeful you all will enjoy this one as much as I am putting it all together! I hope you all are having a blast getting ready for Nationals. Remember that competition is what you make it. I can't wait to share our week celebration together and I thank you for a surreal and exciting year!
Until next time!
