April 2009 Edition Of
"The Excellence"
Victoria's Voice
It’s
that time of year again when our dreams bud just like the trees and flowers of
spring. It is a time to put forth
the effort to make goals a possibility and dreams a reality. This is my favorite
season of the year because it is the beginning of a new time, and pageant season
is just that! We reflect on past successes with the hope that our own dreams for
the future can come true.
The
month of March started off with a very inspirational experience. I was in
Tampa
,
Florida
for GEOVAX awareness. I was brought
in as a spokesperson for the company and to entertain.
The weekend started off with the news conference with the Doctors of
GEOVAX. Doctor Harriott Robinson,
the founder of the vaccine, was so fabulous! He, along with Dr. Bob McNally, who
were completely shocked that a man could look like a woman…it was a great
experience! The weekend was packed
with events-I just had to bring my mother along for a weekend get-away. The
purpose of the weekend was to spread the awareness about the vaccine.
The first appearance for me was at the new “hot spot” Ybor City Le’
Olive’. I was in the show with Rue
Paul, Amy Dimilo of
Florida
-the venue was beautiful and the show was a lot of fun.
The
next night was the big event. Matthew
Mushlin and Michael Bollig did a fantastic job putting the event together for
GEOVAX so perfectly. The show was at
the Honey Pot! OMG…this club was unbelievable! Three floors of FABULOUS!
Steve Moss did an amazing job designing his “state of the art” club.
The night started off to the talents of
Florida
’s own Alisha Markstone, Daniel Hunter and Nicolette-it was wonderful to
perform with all of them! The night got even better with the talents of Melinda
Ryder, Channing LaRue and my Miss Gay America Sister, Charity Case.
The show was a hit and Team GEOVAX was greatly entertained.
A special thanks to TR for helping out with all of the weekend
festivities.
Although
all good things must come to an end, my mother and I stayed another day to spend
some quality time together. We went
to the aquarium and on a wild dolphin excursion, it was so exciting to see the
dolphins in their natural habitat-I have always been partial to dolphins, their
intelligence amazes me! The trip is one I will never forget and I am so thankful
to be a part of such a wonderful event honoring the advancement of the fight
against AIDS.
So
my official reign now begins and I am now on my way to the first prelim, Miss
Gay Mid-America. My thoughts are
crazy at this point because I am thinking to myself “Am I really finally here?
Am I really MGA?” What wonderful thoughts they were! I got into
Memphis
early and me and the boys had a great time putting the finishing touches on
what was going to pan out as a wonderful event.
The day started off with a delicious luncheon that was catered.
Myself along with Memphis Michaels, Sasha Leigh Chambers,
Stephanie Lane
, Chantel Rashae, Jade Sinclair, Madison Lachay and Sasha Nichole, caught up on
the times and enjoyed the time spent together. As I went through all of my
administrative duties I was having flashbacks of myself back in my competition
days-glad to be on the “other side of the table”, I might add, but I miss
the unknown excitement of being in competition.
The girls came prepared with impressive packages and the will to win.
Congratulations to all of them for a job well done, and to the new Miss
Mid Americar Chantel Rashae and first alternate Madison Lachae-best of luck to
you both at Nationals.
I
couldn’t have asked for a better first pageant.
Thank you to Mikaila Kay for a job well done as lead judge, to Mike
Divokey for being a great tabulator, Rodney Brown for being a wonderful stage
manager, Dominique Sanchez and Rachel Erikks for being great “big sisters”
and M.C.’s. Last, but not least,
Larry and Terry for not only being extraordinary bosses, but most importantly,
great friends.
My
next stop is to Miss Gay Delaware, I wish all of the contestants the best of
luck! (to be continued in the May 2009 newsletter)
Until
next time,

A New Season…
Happy Spring! We hope that each of you, no matter how busy, will find a
moment to stop and enjoy all of the beauty that nature has to offer, this time
of year. This is an amazingly beautiful time of the year and it is always good
to take time away from the normal hustle and bustle, to enjoy. We have to keep
reminding ourselves, that we need to slow down, every now and again, to enjoy
the beautiful things in life. With our VERY demanding day jobs and the pageant
season, now in full motion, we are left with very little time for ourselves, but
we find it very important that time away from the day to day stress will usually
keep our mental health in a better condition.
The Miss Gay America 2010 pageant season is off to a great start. The first two
preliminaries have occurred both of which were very successful and just as we
suspected, our many hours of preparation of Miss Gay America 2009-Victoria
DePaula have proven to be well spent as we have received many positive comments
on the job performance of Victoria DePaula. As Victoria will attest, it is easy
to have an assumption of the stress and level of responsibility that accompanies
the crown and title of Miss Gay America, but until one actually sees all of the
detail that it takes from all angles (promoters, contestants, judges and
audience), to ensure a properly managed contest, one cannot truly know the
requirements of a Miss Gay America. Being a good Miss Gay America is about
preparing for the expected so that you can be better prepared to encounter the
unexpected. We have spent many months attempting to prepare Victoria DePaula for
his official reign and now that the training has concluded, it is up to
Victoria, to remember our many hours of lecture and lesson, and then to take the
“schooling” that should be mixed with the right amount of common sense and
selfless attitude, which are the key ingredients to make an incredible mark in
history, as the reigning Miss Gay America. The audience, most always, will not
see the sometimes chaos backstage but when it is all said and done, if the Miss
Gay America has done a satisfactory job, most all will see the very reason why
he was crowned as Miss Gay America. As we have explained, this year should not
be a year about “Victoria DePaula” but rather should be a year about the
Miss Gay America pageant system…and if that attitude is held during the reign,
it will be a very successful year and a very positive mark will forever be left,
on the Miss Gay America pageant system. So, as the contestants and audience
prepare for another exciting year, we trust that when the year is over, you will
learn that excellence, doesn’t just happen, it is something that must be
worked on, each day… Respect is not given, it is earned…
Until
Next Time!
Larry and
Terry
