"The Excellence"

Mikaila's Mirror

The Holidays are a time we give thanks for the great things in our lives. Such as family, friends, and loved ones. A time where we look forward to the good things in life and great blessings like my famous Pumpkin Roll (a pumpkin sponge cake rolled and filled with a light sweet cream cheese... Yummmmmy!) I hope everyone has a happy holiday and is able to share time with everyone on his or her list.

Once again, I want to thank you all for the overwhelming congratulatory emails that I’ve received from you. I was set on making sure that I responded to each and every last one of them. I apologize if I haven’t yet gotten to yours. I promise I will.

In my spare time when not appearing all over the greater Arizona area I have been taking time to read over the handbook and rules and regulations so that I may be ready to answer any questions promoters, contestants, or general people would like to know about the America system. In the next few weeks I will be going to Memphis to have my first   “ Fathers/Daughter” meeting to discuss Miss Gay America related items. I look forward to all they are going to teach me, and what they have planned for this next amazing year. I am a sponge and ready to soak it all in. While in Memphis I will be attending and helping raise money for the Memphis Child Advocacy Center. It’s a great function Larry and Terry are a part of and I’m blessed and honored to be included. We will also be making decisions on the official headshots from my official Miss Gay America photo shoot (to use as the official Promotional Photos), I had last week with Don Thompson of Thompson Imagery. I had an amazing time and look forward to what we all decide on.

As of right now my first official Preliminary appearance is set for Miss Gay Baltimore on February 8th at The Hippo. I’m very excited to be asked back to Maryland not just as a performer but also now as Miss Gay America 2008. I have been getting lots of emails and phone calls from contestants about their prelims. I offer my opinion when someone asks me about their competition package, but it comes with the disclaimer that “this is only MY opinion and I am by no means an expert on what will represent YOU the best”. So for any of you that get frustrated in your preparations for a prelim and need a 2nd, 3rd, or a 4th opinion, I’m hear to listen or to ask a question feel free to email me at Misskaymga2008@hotmail.com.

The Season is about to get blown into full swing here in the next few short months. I look forward to everyone I have spoken with that I will finally get to meet again and get to know. If anyone has any questions at all or just want to chat please don’t hesitate to drop me an email Misskaymga2008@hotmail.com.

My advice: Pace yourself this holiday…take little breaks when trying to taste all the goodies and always, always save room for desert. The holidays are time for Desert Heaven. On a more serious note don’t ever let anyone tell you, you can’t do something. Don’t doubt yourself or your gut feelings. Do what makes you happy and what you feel in your heart. Show the world who you are. You’re a unique individual with a passion for the art of female impersonation and you strive to be the best. Show them when the lights come on, the music intro plays and you step onto the stage, that it’s your moment and that you have what it takes to be our next symbol of excellence as Miss Gay America.

The Molding of a Good Miss Gay America

As we will, in just a few days, be seeing our newly crowned Miss Gay America 2008-Mikaila Kay, for our annual Fathers/Daughter weekend retreat to provide more detail for job function, administrative issues and other general preparation, we can already tell, just by our interaction thus far, that there is great potential for Mikaila to make a very positive mark on the Miss Gay America pageant system during his reign. Of course, we are very proud of his beauty and talent, but those are only two components needed to define, in our opinion, a good Miss Gay America. It is clear that the foundation has been laid, either in daily experience or just learning from watching  the mistakes of others, but rest assured that by the time March 14, 2008 (The Miss Mid America pageant) gets here, which as of today, is the first preliminary of the season, Mikaila will be more than ready to handle any administrative issues that occur. Now that Mikaila has had several weeks to make promotional photos (which are beautiful by the way) and to think about his travel wardrobe, hair and accessories, we will begin, next weekend, our intense training and preparation to assure us and the rest of the promoters, that he will be ready to take on the job of Miss Gay America. We learn something new each year, and we constantly strive for ways to alleviate some of the stress of the reigning Symbol of Excellence. We know that this is not an easy job for the nations best, but we also want him to be able to say at the conclusion of his reign that this was one of the most incredible and worthwhile experiences life to date. On, October 21, 2007, the judges made the selection of who would be the next Miss Gay America,  now it is our turn to mold their selection into what the country expects a Miss Gay America to be. Most of the time, the molding of the beauty and talent is already done…now it is up to us to ensure that Miss Gay America is ready to do the best job possible. Yes, our standards are high, and as a result, this country has heightened its expectation of our leading gentleman. We want Miss Gay America to shine brighter than the others, in every way possible. That is one of the main reasons why we push as hard as we do to actually see the excellence in the titleholder… If Miss Gay America is going to be known as the  “Symbol of Excellence”, he has got to earn the respect in order to be well received. Many people, no matter who is wearing the crown, have an undying and profound admiration for the title of Miss Gay America , so the love and respect is already there before the crown is placed on someone’s head, so it is up to the new Miss Gay America, to maintain and increase that depth of love and respect.

Be on the lookout, for a possible exciting announcement about "The Pageant" documentary... We hope to have an announcement in the next few weeks!

And now for a holiday thought...now that Thanksgiving has come and gone, we are reminded of how grateful we are, to be in the position to manage the operations of the nation’s largest and most respected pageant for female impersonators. It is not always an easy job, but when we are fortunate enough to have made many friendships from all over this nation and can see the deep respect and appreciation that most have for this incredible legacy that has played a very important part in gay history, we are humbled to be in such an important position. No matter your beliefs, we hope that each of you can take time to appreciate what you have and to celebrate the “good will” that is so free flowing during the holiday season.

Until next time….
Larry and Terry
