August 2006 Edition Of Excellence
Du'Bois' Dish By Nicole DuBois (MGA 2006)

Hello ladies and gentlemen, I bring you greetings from
the Continental Airlines, Concourse B. I am in Houston, Texas, and yes another
one of my flights has been delayed. Due to fog, rain, or mechanical problems-
this is always the scary one. Just get another plane for God’s sake, please; a
girl can only take so much DRAMA. I also missed the Drag 101 class on packing,
because almost every time my luggage is over the 50 lbs weight limit. It is just
horrible. I wish at times I could just pack pasties and panties, but I know it
is not that kind of party!!!
I traveled to Tacoma, WA. for the Miss Northwest Regional Pageant. New promoters
Scott and Tony are just wonderful. Great club and great time. With only 2
contestants, we still had our contest. Cha-Cha Chalez of California was
victorious, with Lotus Mandalay as first alternate. The day after the contest I
stayed with Scott and Tony at there beautiful home, they had invited some guests
over for a country meal and a meet and greet Miss Gay America. Southern cooking
was the order of the day for us all, complete with fried chicken, greens, corn
bread, baked beans, and peach cobbler. It was absolutely DELICIOUS…Thank you all
for your wonderful hospitality.
Miss Ohio America was the next weekend, held in Warren, Ohio. Promoter Tina
Schumacher and assistant Jerry Baer had 8 contestants battling it out for the
crown. All of the contestants were wonderful and eager to learn and grow in the
art form. Congrats to all who competed. MGA’S 004 and 005, Rachel and Raquel
were also on hand for the festivities. We crowned Krystal Stone, and 1st
alternate was Satin Rose. It was also a pleasure to work with many former Miss
Ohio’s. This was also a title that the late Brazon held, who was also a two-time
top 10 finalist at MGA. She is dearly missed.
On July 15th, my dear friend Opal Masters and I traveled to Alexandria, La. We
performed at the Miss Unique Pageant. The people of this community have been
like a second family to me. Owner/ Friend Tim Bordelon, who also was a MGA
promoter in the past, has been very instrumental in helping me in my career, and
has always been there for me. I love and appreciate you and the community of
this great city. Thanks for the memories!
Next stop was Oklahoma. This is the 30 year anniversary for this great pageant.
Reigning MGO, Tabitha Taylor was amazing. I had a blast with her, as well as
other former winners. They are my new sisters, I love you girls. I also worked
with Catia Lee Love, and Rachel Erikks… we always have many laughs when we are
together. Okalahoma had 13 fabulous contestants, promoters Donnie, Scott and
assistant Lynn did an amazing job. The pageant was held at Angles, Awesome venue
for a pageant. I also had a personal valet in John Bebee, former Mr. Gay All-
America, thank you for everything. By nights end we crowned K’rli Adams, and 1st
alternate was Lindsay Paige. These 2 lovelies are going to rock it out... Thank
you OKC, for a FABOO time in your great city. Hope to see you again very soon.
The end of this month 2 dear friends of mine, Rusty and Andy held Miss
Mississippi Regional, in Hattiesburg, MS, at Club Groove. I also had my sister
Raquel there with me for moral support. I have promoted pageants in the past,
but it is different when your bosses are in attendance, and I thank Larry and
Terry for being there with us as well. Many people believe that L&T and I are
neighbors. Well if you consider driving 6 hours to visit with your neighbors is
close, well so be it. We had so many people help us with getting things together
for the night. Thank you to all who helped make the evening a great success.
Also thank you to our panel of judges, and guest entertainers as well. So far we
have had the largest Regional Preliminary, with 9 contestants. It was a packed
house, also a special shout -out to Tennessee promoters P. J, and Paulette,
along with Alabama Regional promoters- Gary and Tim, and Louisiana promoters
Chris and Raquel... thank you all for your support, and will see you soon
.Thanks also to Avery, John, Brandon, and the staff of Groove for all of the
help. Special guest entertainers were MGA 005 Raquel Chevalier, Nikki Andrews,
Anita Cocktail, Belinda Botox, Kelly and Gail, special thanks to my dear friend
Vyness Diane, our Emcee, I love you...By the end of the long night, Brittney
O'Bryan of Dallas was crowned, with Madison Lashay of Hattiesburg as first
alternate, also Tanisha Foxx was second alternate. Thanks to each and every
contestant for making our first year a huge success. And special thanks to Larry
and Terry for all of your advice and help. I am sorry about the heat, and for me
losing my mind.
I want to wish each contestant the best of luck in our upcoming prelims for

Miss Gay
America 2007 is rapidly approaching…
It is difficult to believe that in 80 days, we will crown
Miss Gay America 2007. As we look back at the past nine months, since the
crowning of Nicole DuBois-Miss Gay America 2006, we realize that time has passed
much too quickly. As Nicole will tell you, the job of Miss Gay America is not
always as easy and glamorous as one might imagine. Don’t misunderstand us.
Winning the most prestigious title in the country, in the art of female
impersonation carries its fair share of spotlight of glamour and splendor but
also with the job of Miss Gay America, sometimes there is a need to make a
decision that you had rather not (that might not be popular with everyone),
sometimes you have to help carry a prop onto the stage, sometimes you have to
calm an irate contestant, sometimes you have to smooth out wrinkles caused by a
last minute detail overlooked by a promoter, sometimes you have to play
moderator to a dispute between promoter and contestant, and the list goes on and
on. But we hope that at the conclusion of the reign of Nicole DuBois, as Miss
Gay America 2006, she can reflect upon her year as The Symbol of Excellence and
know that she positively contributed to the pageant system, did her very best to
represent the title of Miss Gay America and simultaneous enjoy the travel, the
wonderful people and prestige that is associated with holding a title of this
caliber.
We are very excited about the competition this year, for this year, as in last
year, is sure to be one of the closest Top 10, in the history of the Miss Gay
America pageant. We make this statement based on the assumption of consistency,
as in prior years. There are several returning “veterans” with fantastic
competition packages and also some “new comers” that promise to bring a well
constructed competition package. Being selected as a Top 10 finalist will be a
tremendous accomplishment, in and of it self. We have spoken with many
contestants, who seek our opinion regarding their competition package. While we
give our opinion regarding the competition package, we also remind those who
seek our advice, that we are not the judges, so they need to construct their
packages, based on what they think will be appealing to the majority of the
judges, not just a few. Based on what various contestants have mentioned that
they will be doing for the national competition in October, the audience will be
thoroughly entertained, the contestants will be amazed and the judges will have
an extremely difficult job to do.
There have been many obstacles to overcome this year (with most everyone
including contestants, promoters, and even the national office of Miss Gay
America), but we are very excited about the upcoming national competition. We
feel as if we have chosen excellent facilities to host the events of the Miss
Gay America 2007 pageant. The Holiday Inn Select-Airport Memphis Grand Ballroom
is going to be an incredible location for the preliminary night competition and
the Revue Show and of course, the very beautiful Cannon Center, for final night
competition. Our goal is to make each and every year, better than the last. We
want the Miss Gay America pageant experience to be exceptional for all involved
including contestants, promoters and fans.
There are still many preliminary pageants to come and competition is going to be
fierce, all over the country, as it has been all year long. While we nervously
await, the identity of the next Miss Gay America, we already begin working on
the next years contest. As the pieces fall into place, in making the Miss Gay
America 2007 pageant, the best yet, we constantly strive to find ways to improve
the contest and we anticipate that with the changes to the Talent and Evening
Gown categories, this year will prove to be a great competition. There will be
some who will stay within the realm of traditional competition and there will be
some who attempt to “color outside the line” but again, this years competition
will be exceptional. It seems that at the conclusion of every preliminary, the
promoters indicate that competition is getting better and better with each
passing year. Most every entertainer aspires to be a Miss Gay America
titleholder but only few are honored with being selected into the “sisterhood”.
In October, the judges will have an extremely difficult job to do, in choosing
who we will be so closely working with during the next pageant season but we are
confident in knowing that whomever is selected, next year will be yet another
great year for the Miss Gay America pageant system.
We look forward to seeing many of you, that we have not seen during the year, in
Memphis for the coronation of Miss Gay America 2007.
Until next time…
