Coco's Corner
Miss Gay America 2010 Coco Montrese
February 2010
Wow is all I can say as I write my very first letter to all of you. I’ve dreamed of this moment for little over 3 years now. I even had many rough drafts written, planning for the time that my dream would become reality. I can truly say that no rough draft and no pre-preparation can ever prepare you for this moment. I chose to call my letter Coco’s Corner because I believe that in this world we all have our own little space where we share our thoughts or experiences, hopes and dreams. All of these corners put together, make up our world and that is what makes our world different in many parts of the globe. I wish I could take all of you with me on my journey this year. But since that’s not possible I will use this letter every month to recreate all I experience in my travels this year. As you all know this is a life altering experience and will have many challenges along the way. As a contestant for many years, you knew when this dream was accomplished, that is when the real work will begin. Many of the Miss Gay America preliminary promoters and supporters put in a lot of time, effort and money into their City, State and Regional Pageants. For this reason, I feel as the title holder, I must equally devote my time and effort into furthering the success of the system. As for many things in life, you get out what you put in. I look at my life as Miss Gay America as a relationship and in a healthy relationship, you learn and grow together and that requires a lot of attention. I know that through all I experience, it will be an adventure like no other and that’s what makes it all exciting and worthwhile.
As the days go by, I plan diligently for my coronation which will take place at the end of February in St. Louis MO.The pageant season that starts shortly thereafter, I can truly say everything happens for a reason. I’ve receive many encouraging words of support from many former Miss Gay America’s, friends, promoters within the Miss Gay America family and other well-wishers from others systems as well. My first public appearance was at Miss Florida USofA inTampa Florida where I was a judge and entertainer. They welcomed me with opened arms and a standing ovation as the new Miss Gay America representative and with Florida being my home it really got me off to a great start.
A personal thanks to my Miss Gay Heart of America family, Cocktail Entertainment my Daddy and Mommy-Mike and Rodney (Anita Cocktail Miss Tennessee America 2009), for your hard work and dedication to me. I hope it paid off for you. Making you proud was a priority to me. I know that in your hearts when it was time to pass me off to another family you both prayed that it would be into the arms of Larry and Terry. I think your prayers have been answered; maybe they will let you have joint custody of me. My Memphis support team, Raven and the crew who stuck by me at Miss Gay America this year, I am so grateful.
Many of my Miss Gay America friends from across the country are trying to make arrangements to attend the coronation in St. Louis and for all their efforts I am grateful. As the traveling begins and the adventures start to surface, I’m sure I’ll have much more to share with you in the near future. It’s very important to me that the public is able to embark upon this journey with me because I am only a representation of you. As Miss Gay America 2010 I know that this job requires and deserves my undivided attention. I say to all promoters and supporters, I know the task at hand and I will honor, respect and protect your investment as well as my own investment in the Miss Gay America System.
I am looking forward to a great year of pageantry, filled with new friends and adventures.

March 2010
Many dream of becoming Miss Gay America but now that I am living it, I can truly say it’s a dream come true. This month started out with a whirlwind mini tour, Baltimore , DC , and Virginia all in 3 days. I would first attend Miss Gay Baltimore, invited by the reigning Miss Gay Maryland 2009 Sue Nami and the promoter Josie foster. It was the last preliminary to Miss Gay Maryland America. I was greeted in baggage claim at the airport by Roger Dimick (promoter of Miss Gay Maryland America), Tillie (Joe Angel) from Oklahoma and Sue Nami all holding up signs with different variations of my given name. I knew right then I was in for a wonderful time and a lot of laughs with a great group of people. So as we got closer to the parking garage, I could feel the temperature drop and being the young Floridian boy I am, (ok not so young) I began to prepare myself for what I had never experienced before in my life, inches and inches of snow EVERYWHERE!!!! It must have been the 20th snow storm of their season. I quickly adjusted. Roger Dimick gave me beautiful flowers and fed me Baltimore ’s finest City café’, then we headed to the Hippo (Wow! I love that club) where I met my weekend host Philip and his lovely Partner. I also met the bar staff and contestants for this evenings pageant. I also met the other contestants who already qualified for the upcoming Miss Gay Maryland pageant. The competition went off without a hitch. It was my first public appearance and I was received with a standing ovation from the wonderful people of Baltimore . The hospitality was superb.
So after a little rest and relaxation it was time for a Chinese buffet, Sue Nami‘s (suggestion of course). Roger, Tillie, Sue Nami and myself ate until we were bursting at the seams, then it was off for a little fabric shopping. Finally we made our way to Ziegfields in DC… what can I say, it’s an amazing complex with a great owner, a wonderful staff, a beautiful show cast and show director Ella Fitzgerald, management Jon Parks along with Tatiyanna Voche (Miss Gay Mid East America 2009). All made me feel at home. I was also welcomed by DC’s own Robert York, promoter of Miss Gay DC America. He presented me with a bouquet of 3 dozen red roses all held together by a miniature crown. If I never felt like a princess before I did in DC.
Next it was off to Virginia the next night to Freddie’s a wonderful venue where I was able to let my hair down and perform fun upbeat music. I once again met a wonderful staff of people and entertainers there as well. Swiftly, I said my goodbye’s and returned to DC and Zeigfields for an encore performance. “They liked me, they really liked me.” (My favorite line from a Jim Carey movie).
Then, just as fast as my whirlwind tour began it was time to come to an end. My trial run and mini crash course in traveling was over. I think I passed with flying colors. Thanks to all involved as it was a great experience. I’m looking forward to my return there.
So now it’s a race back home to sunny Florida to get ready for the trip of a lifetime to St. Louis , Missouri , for the coronation of Miss Gay America 2010. Wow! It is still so surreal to even type those words. My seamstress and longtime friend in Florida , Kori Stevens was sewing around the clock to make sure I looked my best for the review show following the coronation. Once everything was completed, it was time to head to Orlando International Airport and board the Southwest flight that would change my life forever… Just like any good thing in life, the flight wasn’t easy. It was packed with many cranky infants leaving their vacation stays at the happiest place on earth, Walt Disney World (no comment…).
After my eventful flight to St. Louis I was greeted by one of my Heart of America Parents Rodney Brown (Anita Cocktail) and my new father Terry Eason (L &T Entertainment). It was like being a bride arriving in town for her wedding. Once the rest of my parental entourage arrived (Larry Tyger and Mike Divoky) we head to Clementine’s where we met up with Jade Sinclair (Miss Gay Midwest 2009) and her partner, Victoria DePaula (MGA2009), Sparkle Iman (Miss Gay Kansas America 2009) and Alonzo Gault for dinner… or should I say rehearsal dinner. Then it was off to bed for me as I had a long day ahead of me in the morning. This all felt like a dream wedding…
Morning came quickly and we had a lovely breakfast in the hotel restaurant. Then, we headed out for a few last minute things and lunch with many of my friends and fellow competitors that were local or who came to town for the event. The time flew by so fast, then, it was time to return to the hotel and prepare for the evening.
I was so calm and relaxed… this all felt so natural and as if it was who I was born to be. Then it was time! The atmosphere at the Grey Fox had so much positive energy. The well-wishers were many but most of all I arrived in the dressing room and there wasVictoria DePaula standing there getting ready with a glow in her eyes and a glare of approval. I smiled and fought back the tears asVictoria and I embraced and all the former Miss Gay America’s present for the event greeted me. Mikaila Kay, Tasha Kohl, Rachael Erikks, and Vicki Vincent were all happy to be present for this occasion. I’d received messages wishing me well from almost every former MGA you could think of…
Vicki hugged me and told me how proud she was of me and I reminded her that she was the one responsible for me even entering the Miss Gay America Pageant (3 years prior). This all began to become so emotional for all parties involved. Then that friendly face who also told me I would become MGA someday soon entered the dressing room (Tumara Mahorning). She handed me a gift along with a hug, and then gifts began to flow from everywhere. Erica Foxx (Miss Gay Missouri America 2009) welcomed me to her city with a very classy elegant (gift much like herself). Robert York once again showed his love for MGA 2010. Sarah Lewis handcrafted a set of beautiful regal earrings and presented them to me as she knows I love things that sparkle.
The ceremony got underway to a packed house. The crowd cheered for every former MGA as they graced the stage. Then they announced my name and I walked on to that stage feeling like a bride coming down the aisle, as I looked out into the audience and saw my friends and peers; Symphony Alexander (who drove threw a snow storm to be there), Tajma Stetson, Kate Spade, Sparkle Iman, Jade Sinclair, Sasha Nicole just to name a few and the promoters from preliminaries all over the US. I began to fight back the tears and as Victoria DePaula placed the crown on my head…
I know for many trying to accomplish this dream, it’s more than just a title or a crown, or even a win at the end of a competition. This is a chance to be a part of a family with history and longevity like no other. So now the Coronation is over, and the real work for Miss Gay America 2010 begins. I know it takes more than a pretty face and talented entertainer to be successful in this position, but for an individual who’s willing to take on every challenge and complete every task with a passion for perfection and punctuation, the sky’s the limit. I say to every entertainer who pursues this title of Miss Gay America… “to whom much is given much is required”. The race is not given to the swift or to the strong but to the one that endures until the end. Follow your Heart, I did.

Miss Gay America 2010
May 2010
I'm going to start this article of this month by telling you about the wonderful friendships I've made throughout the years at MGA… these friendships can sometimes develop into life long relationships and this month I had the opportunity to visit a friend, Celebrity Starr, as she gave up her city preliminary title to Miss Gay Arizona America, Miss Metropolis America in Phoenix Arizona. It was an honor to actually be asked by Celebrity to be in attendance because she asked me less than two weeks after Miss Gay America 2010 competition was over… I was invited just because of our friendship. It really means alot when someone which you've competed against, along the way, personally flies you in to share in the memory of their give up. Thank you.
In Phoenix , ArizonaI had a blast… My very first show was in Tucson at "COLORS" with Lucinda Holiday, who invited me into her home and allowed me to transform along side her as we prepared for the show. Thank you Colors for such wonderful hospitality and allowing me to be apart of a great night of entertainment. Then, after the show we went back to Lucinda's home where she presented me with my beautiful prize package jewelry set. And then we celebrated by taking Waffle House by storm… and yes I do eat. The next show was with Mikayla Kay (MGA 2008) Barbra Seville, Celebrity Starr and myself at "FORBIDDEN" an amazing venue as well with warm welcoming staff, management and patrons. This show was a lot of fun and high energy. What I enjoyed most about these venues in Arizona is that they allowed me the opportunity to address the crowd and say hello and thank you for coming, then also talk about Miss Gay America, the history, the legacy and the competition October in Columbus Ohio. I had a great time…
The next day it was back to Tucson for what they call " STREETFAIR"… yes I was up early for what we call a "DAYTIME FEMALE ILLUSIONIST SHOW" with many familiar friends like China Collins, Shea Shae Larese (former Miss US of A Classic), Janee' Starr and many of the local titleholders and showgirls in the area. I got to see an old friend very familiar to the MGA system Claudia Foster, who congratulated me on accomplishing my goal. All in all , Celebrity and I had a grand ole time! I was really enjoying my time in Arizona . I wouldn’t dare write this part of this article with out mentioning a few of the people who really made my stay amazing, Celebrity/Carl's mom Carolyn, such and amazing and supportive mother… (she took me to lunch as soon as I arrived in the city), my personal assistant all week long, city prelim owner of valley of the sun Dominique, I never lifted a bag or opened up a door the entire time I was in Arizona, even when I was just Martin he treated me like a queen, and that took a lot of getting use too. Daniel Eckstrom the promoter for Miss Gay Arizona America, although he was going through a major life altering event in his life and his families lives, he still found time to have a very nice dinner with me and talk with me personally to get to know where I stand and who I am… We were joined by many city preliminary owners and bar owners from the area. I'm still eating my red, white, and blue M&M's… Daniel thank you so much. Afeelya Bunz, Ron and his partner Lee, co promoter of Western States America , and my new found friend Edward (arizonadrag.com), they were all in attendance and wonderful company to keep. TC Yaylor Miss Gay Arizona although she is a beauty, she's more than just a pretty face, she is such a hardworker and advocate… she's done many fundraisers for great organizations during her reign and she raises money beyond belief, although we weren't able to spend a lot of time together, but was not at all offended as she was doing her duties as Miss Gay Arizona America…which because she was doing her job accurately, it didn't allow for much social time. TC Taylor is just another great friendship I made along the way at MGA.
The Miss Gay Metropolis review show at "The Rock" was great, the formers were stunning as I got to sit and watch them take the stage with familiar faces like Angela Dodd, Mya Mckenzie, Chantel Douglas and TC Taylor. It was a pretty cool night… thank you Mike for welcoming me into your establishment .
So as this trip was winding down we came to the day of the city preliminary Miss Gay Metropolis America(promoters Afeelya Bunz and Johnny/Stasha did a wonderful job with this city prelim). This was my reason for being brought into Phoenix . It was held at another wonderful establishment called "CHARLIE'S". I got to sit back and watch TC and Daniel at work and they were awesome. Performing and assisting them in anyway I could was my job. My friend Celebrity Starr had a wonderful step-down and my encouraging words to her were, “never give up on your dreams and do not change from being the kind, caring, and giving person that you are. Smile through it all and your reward will be great!” I parted Arizona with great memories.
Then it was on to Baltimore , for Miss Gay Maryland America, with Roger Dimick and the reigning Miss Gay Maryland Sue Nami. I arrived a few days early and stayed at my home away from home with Phillip and his lovely partner. CHRIS (yes I know his name is Roger) and MY little dog Maddy. Roger was an honor to work with and I could easily make Maryland my home because of him and many other reasons.
We had a blast with all the activities that Miss Gay Maryland has to offer, bingo night, in which all the contestants were in attendance, Sue Nami's wonderful Thai dinner (inside joke), where Sue Nami gave one of the most emotional speeches I've ever heard… it rivaled the Martin Luther King Jr. “I have a dream” speech. The Miss Maryland review show had many legends in attendance and it was amazing!!! Roger Dimick runs an amazing contest and it was well organized to perfection with former Miss Maryland ’s Ashley Banks, Akasha Cassidine, Joanna Blue, Brooke Lane . Sabrina White, Tatianna Voche', Lauren Mitchell and Andora Te Tee. The guest list of emcees and entertainment was stellar… also attending were: Kofi (former Miss Texas everything) and a good friend whose presence made me more relaxed than anything, and then there were all my sisters, Sabrina White (MGA2002)- we bonded right away, Nicole Dubois (MGA2006)-so elegant and down to earth, Raquel Chevallier (MGA2005)-sweet spirited and fun, and Catia Lee Love (MGA2000)- almost like a blood sister or should I say brother (another inside joke) after all the time we've spent together this month. The entire Oklahoma Crew, Tillie, Steven (Pure Chocolate) and Bridget Lee all former Miss Oklahoma 's (and The Oklahoma Suite was nice.) It was also wonderful to see other preliminary owners, bar managers and promoters from other states there as well, showing their support for the system in Maryland (to include John Kane and his partner Matt (Patty Lovelace) Atlantic States Promoters, Jon Parks of Ziegfields in DC and Robert York Miss Gay DC America Regional_.
The Staff and Owner (Chuck Bowers) of the Hippo are some of the best people I know when it comes to how a guest should be treated. This was a well managed establishment and has a long list of characters… I'm sure I'm going to leave someone out so please forgive me if I do, but Tia Chambers-from day one you were amazing to me… thank you. Josie- I wanted for nothing when you were around, to Jason-(Peaches) and every bartender who knew that the current Miss Gay America's idea of a drink is Red Bull served to her in an unopened can with a straw and a glass of ice thank you. The contestants who made me tear up at the dinner when they one by one brought me gifts. Sue Nami, a wonderful Miss Maryland and friend, it's just an honor to know you. The over qualified judges panel who allowed me the opportunity to exercise my skills as an administrator without question, all the people in Maryland who showed their support through attendance, the 10 contestants who worked so hard and followed every direction when I asked them to help each other. To Onyx Revlon, you are now the new Miss Gay Maryland… make us proud and keep up the tradition... I felt the love... Shawn you made me look my best each time I hit the stage and packed me up while I was in critiques (sorry) but thank you. Sushi Nami/Justin (Sue Nami's daughter), our trips to Walmart were eventful!! I learned the meaning of true family in Maryland and I look forward to my return. Roger, you had me spoiled, staying in a castle (Hotel Brexton) which was fit for a princess.
As if I didn't get enough love in Maryland , Catia and I headed over to the nations capitol, DC. for Miss Gay DCAmerica Regional with Robert York and his reigning Miss DC Jessica Jade. I can truly say the love there continued and if anyone knows Robert York, they know he loves and respects his MGA's and treats you like a queen! Catia and I spent our first few days in DC shopping which is my favorite past-time. Robert was our tour guide and just like a little kid seeing DC for the first time I was overwhelmed by the monuments, and federal building all around me. It was just like I remembered it as a child only this time the city had running water and electricity (that was an age joke if you didn't get it). I sat in the backseat taking it all in and since our first few days in DC were suppose to be about rest and relaxation we had the pleasure of staying in Robert and Blake's beautiful condo in VA… yes I know its confusing VA, DC it's all the same to me and then my new babies Wilson and Madison but don’t tell my puppy Maddy in Baltimore as it would be a fight.
So we spent the rest of the day winding down and then it was time for boys night out at Zeigfield's/Secrets with Tatianna Voche', Robert, Catia, and Victoria DePaula, Due to a gag order placed on me by former MGA's, that is all I am allow to say about "Secrets" in DC. it's like Vegas and you know the slogan " What happens in.......... yeah yeah. Dining in DC is always eventful as we went to a few cute places but one stood out from all the rest and it was called Duplex Diner. We were joined by John Kane Promoter of Atlantic States , Lee, Eric , Chad and Justin.
So as time for Miss DC regional started to draw near for Catia and I, itt was time for us to take up residence in our accommodations for the rest of the weeks festivities… as we pulled up we realized we weren't at a hotel but at a beautiful modern building kinda like a home off of MTV's season running show, “The Real World”. We were handed the keys and as we opened the door to our new home just for a few days, it's was really like a reality TV show… well with Catia and I it would definitely be interesting!! So as Robert said his “see ya laters" he then said by the way. “be ready Miss Gay America in your illusion at 6pm as you have an engagement”. Well if you know Robert York, you know you don’t argue with him and you also know that he is full of surprises. This was a surprise I would never forget. Many times in my career I've dreamed of this year in my life and there are certain things you dream of doing well and Roberts surprise was just one of those dreams. Miss America 2010, Caressa Cameron was at the Whitman Walker Annual black tie gala at the Mellon Auditorium (the Whitman Walker organization is a HIV/AIDS awareness and client assistance program in DC) and this affair is a fundraiser to help support the program. I was invited and allowed to have photo op with Caressa which I am sure will go down in history. Miss America 2010 and Miss Gay America 2010- both African American, both in the same building and photographed together… WOW, our society has come a long way. Thank you Robert for making that part of history happen for me.
Then it was off to the review show, but wait, Robert had one more stop in mind… it was the White House, and just by coincidence, our president was on his way out in a helicopter. It's surreal and I can't believe it all happened within the same hour, meeting Miss America and seeing the president leave his home. I was on cloud nine.
When that was done I joined my sister Catia, Jessica Jade (Miss Gay DC America 2009) and Mistyque from Rupaul's Drag Race Season 2, for the review show at EFN Lounge. It turned out to be a great night.
The turnout for Miss Gay DC America was great. Seven lovely contestants and a great line up of entertainment. It was a night to remember, especially for Coti Collins and Kristina Kelly. They both qualified to compete at the 2011 Miss Gay America Pageant. I was especially proud of all the contestants that night, (both new school contestants and old school veterans were back stage working together to put on a great show… and that is what the MGA sisterhood is all about).
I had two more days left in DC and they were filled with performances. I finally had my return to Freddie's inVirginia . It's always a good time with the girls there and they are so down to earth and fun… and bonding with Catia was the best. Last but certainly not least I performed my final night in DC at Omega's, and they were awesome... The dressing room was decked out for the arrival of Catia and I, the warm welcome and thank you card from Big daddy was very nice. I had a great time meeting all the entertainers there. These girls were all very beautiful and sweet. The show was fun and the people were all so accepting. I love DC! As we left Omega's, we headed back to the condo but my very last stop was at the Lincoln Memorial at 2am… it was so moving and touching to stand on the steps where Martin Luther King Jr. made the " I Have A Dream" speech and I closed my eyes and said to myself, “we all have dreams , but it's up to us to follow our dreams and see them through. As my journey as Miss Gay America continues and a wonderful journey it is, I am thankful to all those who have supported me along the beginning of my reign”…
Be sure you read my next article where I will give you the latest on Las Vegas NV and the Miss Western States America pageant, and lets just say what happens in Vegas is NOT gonna stay in Vegas… until then, think excellence!
P.S. Thank you Pete.

We Go On,

Miss Gay America 2010
June 2010
I try to start off every edition of Coco ’s corner talking about the different entities that make Miss Gay America one of the oldest and strongest female impersonation pageant systems around, the family, friendships, sisterhood, promoters, contestants, supporters and sponsors. This month I choose to highlight a sponsor who is fairly new to the system in this capacity. Mark, of Las Vegas Costuming Supply, I met Mark merely as a contestant after receiving a beautiful ring from him at registration as a gift (all 50 contestant received one from him as a welcome) this past year at Miss Gay America. I decided to go up to his room and check out what he had to offer, so I wandered in where all his jewelry and other drag supplies were on display and saw a few appliqués that caught my eye… his nice and friendly voice said “you like those I see? Well you can have them for one dollar a piece.” My eyes lit up like a kid in a candy store and grabbed as many as
my hands could hold, paid him and said “I’ll be back to see the jewelry”. He replied “ I’ll be here!” with a big smile on his face. I then visited him everyday throughout the competition purchasing something upon every visit, even a few more appliqués. I remembered in registration they mentioned the 6 lovely sets of jewelry Miss Gay America would receive during her reign from Las Vegas Costuming Supplies. I remember saying to myself, gosh that would be nice to own someday, didn’t know it would be a reality so soon. Mark was one of the first calls I received when my reign began. I remember it as clear as day he said, “Well hello Miss Gay America, are you ready for your jewelry?” Our contact since then has been none stop. He is a strong supporter of the MGA system and the preliminary across the country. He is just another example of excellence. His text messages just to say” hello, how is it going on the road MGA?” are the ones
that keep me going when I get overwhelmed and fatigued. Thank you Mark and Las Vegas Costuming Supplies for your help in keeping the excellence looking excellent!
Speaking of Las Vegas , Miss Western States America Regional was up next! Held right here in Las Vegas Nevada , the entertainment headquarters or the world. Proud promoters Kenneth Blake and Lee Revelle were ready to take on a great weekend of pageantry and entertainment and I was really looking forward to this pageant. For those of you waiting for something juicy to talk about on the chat boards listen closely because this will be a good one, much better than any holiday. I stepped off the plane in my Stacey Adam shoes , and walked right into the hustle and bustle of the Las Vegas lifestyle, greeted by Kenneth Blake full of flair and style (who also had a show on the strip in less than 2 hours…) and Ron (Lee’s partner). I was whisked away to the hotel and checked into my lovely suite and told see you in an hour downstairs. I was on my way to the Imperial Palace Hotel to see Frank Marino’s show DIVAS!!!! This was so exciting. I got to see the La Cage’ show at the Riviera Hotel and Casino the December before it’s last curtain call. Seeing the new show in a new venue was going to be a real treat! I was joined by a few of my MGA sisters, Victoria DePaula, Rachael Erikks , and many friends like Truly Fabu, Sache’ (Miss Western States 2009), Robert York (Miss Gay DC Regional promoter) and Contestant Monica Moore, Peter and a few others. This show was top notch entertainment, with the likes of Joan Rivers, Cher , Madonna, Celine Deon, Dolly Parton, Liza Minnelli ,Whitney Houston, Diana Ross , Bette Midler, Beyonce’, Tina Turner, Britnney Spears and Lady GaGa WOW!!! This cast rocks!! From Frank Marino himself, Hot Chocolate (Larry Edwards former MGA) to Derek Barry, Chris Woods, Coco Vega, and Western States very own promoter Kenneth Blake, Steven Wayne ,Sammy Gonzales, just to name a few. A Cast of Male Dancers that makes Chip-n-dale dancers look like a thing of the past. Paul Pratt I love you!!! Frank‘s costume changes and Monologues made me laugh hysterically. The number I remember the most in this show is the closing number performed by Kenneth Blake himself entitle “What makes a Man a Man. “I love this number because it reminds me of what the true art form is all about, the transformation is just well choreographed and the words of the song are very touching and real. It puts in perspective all that we do as illusionists, so when someone refers to Miss Gay America as a boy pageant it doesn’t bother me because in the world of Female impersonation we are all men regardless of the decisions and alterations we make. And this performance brings it all together in a matter of minutes .This was a great way to start my weekend of pageantry in Vegas. After the show we were greeted by the cast and took many pictures. Then it was a hummer limo ride off to one of Las Vegasnight life hotspots where the celebrities hang out!!! If I told you, then it wouldn’t be a celebrity hotspot anymore. I was introduced to many and posed for the paparazzi and after a little dancing and orange juice it was time for Miss Gay America to retire and prepare for a day of pageantry filled with administrative duties, opening rehearsals with the Las Vegas Dancers, Judges briefings and contestants orientations. You’d think I would be exhausted just mentioning the next day’s activities but living this dream doesn’t allow for fatigue. I woke up real early, met with the dancers for the opening, and conducted a full day of pageantry and everything ran like clockwork, The old Debbie Reynolds theatre right off the strip was the backdrop for Miss Western States America. It was amazingly beautiful with red Velvet Curtains and matching red velvet walls and carpet… this stage was every entertainers dream and it was where 2 contestants Monica Moore and China Collins would battle it out for a Las Vegas audience, both receiving their ticket to Miss Gay America, being judged by former Miss Gay America 2009 Victoria DePaula, and many big names in the Las Vegas world of entertainment, long time Impersonator Frank Marino, and choreographer were just some of the qualified judges who crowned Monica Moore your New Miss Western States America. The next night we all attended DIVAS once again… contestants Monica Moore and China Collins, joined by Angela Dodd, Truly Fabu, Duwanna Moore and the entire pageant staff and supporters. It was another great night in Las Vegas .
My pageant duties were over and I had two extra days of rest and relaxation in Las Vegas and I checked into the Vdara at City Center (the newest entertainment complex in Las Vegas) and relaxed for a quick two day mini vacation… ok so I did go shopping and lay by the pool and catch a few cirque shows but this really was relaxation or what you would call therapy! Thank you to Dwanna Moore for your wonderful hospitality in Las Vegas during my mini vacation. My stay in Las Vegas came to an end, Kenneth picked me up from city center and we had an early lunch buffet and discussed some future business as we over ate at the buffet and then it was kicking and screaming all the way to the airport. Don’t worry… everything I didn’t tell you about this Las Vegas trip I’m sure they will make it all up in the chat rooms online (ha ha).
Next stop Oklahoma !!!!!! I have been told by many formers that Miss Gay Oklahoma America is going to be a very memorable pageant experience for me... Now I know exactly what they meant. I landed in Oklahoma and it was like being at home, very drama and care free, Oklahoma was another place where people were calm, cool and collected, or at least they were until the tornado sirens when off, but I’ll get to that in a second. I was greeted at the airport by Aron (Catia Lee Love) a face I am oh so familiar with on the road now… we’ve spent a great amount of time together and getting to know her/him has been one of the highlights of my reign thus far! (Catia this is the part where you get all teary eyed and sentimental). She checked me in at the host hotel and I needed some serious rest before the show that night. After my rejuvenation we headed to the bar for Catia’s weekly show. It was great. Oklahoma was welcoming just like I was told they would be. The 2nd day was a day of girl’s day out with shopping and eating. This was the night of the bus tour and Miss Gay Oklahoma review show featuring Miss Shantel Mandalay Miss Gay Oklahoma America 2009. By this time Tillie Lane (MGOA 1983) and Pure Chocolate (Steven MGOA2005) arrived into town. If you know them both, you know exactly what that means, I was in for a good time. Mark from Las Vegas costumes was there at the review show selling his beautiful jewelry and showing his support. The review show was great and showcased many formers like Trudy Tyler MGOA 1977, Tillie lane MGOA 1983, Kris Kohl MGOA 2003, and the lovely and always painted Lindsay Page MGOA 2007and many more. The night was ended with the roasting of Shantel by all the formers! It was a very fun laidback well-organized evening. I arrived back at the hotel after an IHOP visit, tired and ready for bed, I laid down and at 5am, I’m awaken by a phone call and a loud horn blaring noise, across the city, I thought it was that great day and Gabriel was blowing his trumpet ready to carry me home!!! But No, it was the tornado sirens!!!! What to do? I don’t know… I’m from the land of Hurricanes , you at least get a bit more of a warning to evacuate. I answered the phone and it was Catia saying Girl, turn on the TV, you’ll be alright! I finally calmed down and went back to sleep. The next day I was awaken by a knock at my door, it was former Miss Gay America Dominique Sanchez, as she was head judge this year at Miss Gay Oklahoma America. We hadn’t had a chance to see each other since competition at Miss Gay America but we took a little time to catch up and then it was time for me to go to work once again as the administrator and contestants liaison at registration and orientation. It was preliminary night, evening gown and solo talent with all 9 contestant s who qualified. The night went off without a hitch, the bar staff was amazing and everything ran like a machine just like I was informed it would by many former MGA’s. The next night began with another star studded opening where all the formers dressed in different character icons just like the show in Las Vegas ! It was great! Catia as Liza that was fun to watch! Then the contestants competed in talent and soon it was time to crown the new Miss Gay Oklahoma America . When it all came down, 1st alternate was Mya Mokka Iman and Londenn B. Raine was your new Miss Gay Oklahoma America. These contestants are both very capable of making Oklahoma shine this year at Miss Gay America Congrats to them both!
Well now it was time for me to experience the saying “MGA never sleeps”. I got back to the hotel around 2:30 AM, critiques with contestants until 3:30 a.m. I allowed contestants who wanted more feedback into my room while I packed and prepared to leave for the airport by 5 am for a 6:30am flight to Columbus , Ohio . Yes, Miss Mid Atlantic America with promoters Aron Aranda and Tiffanie Taylor was up next!
With a layover in Memphis and Delta Airlines connection flight cracking my laptop computer (don’t even ask…), I arrived with exactly 30mins to spare to attend registration and orientation at noon. Well, with the screaming babies sitting directly behind me on both aircrafts, sleeping was not an option so there I was still wired from the pageant the night before and ready to go. I was also so excited because this is the city where Miss Gay America 2011 is going to be held and I’ve never had the pleasure of being inColumbus Ohio , so this was all very exciting. I was greeted by my assistants for my stay Christina Davis and Tonya McGinnis… they were amazing and anything that could go wrong, they had a solution for not to mention how much fun they were to be with… they kept me on the Red bull, up and alert… and then I quickly rushed to the bar Axis, where four great contestants were gathered and ready to get things underway. As I entered the building I was very impressed by
this upscale facility with a beautiful stage with a modern flare. I took my place at the table on stage with Kristina Kelly Miss Mid-Atlantic America 2009 and we began. This was a wonderful pageant and like many of the others it ran smoothly. Again, Mike Rinehart ( Mideast promoter) and Mark from Las Vegas Costuming were both in attendance showing their support of every part of the MGA system.
Still running on no sleep, I was able to make it all the way through to crowning where 2nd alternate was Hellin Bedd, 1st alternate was Sue Nami of Baltimore , Maryland and Symphony Alexander Love was crowned the new Miss Gay Mid Atlantic America 2010. After critques with the contestants, we all headed to Inn Rehab a great cozy bar to see Hellin Bedd’s show with Diamond Hunter and Erika Evans (Miss Gay Ohio America 2005), who was a wonderful host, along with Jeff McNeil at the pageant as well. Then we headed back to the lavish 2 bedroom suite where we watched DVD’s and ate White Castle burgers that Aron provided for us. I knew Kristina was coming down from her room so I asked Isis her dresser to hide a few burgers for me before she arrived so I would have something to eat after getting out the shower. Well, I didn’t think Isis would tell her about my request and as I showered… like a hurricane Kristina showed up and confronted me about the burgers… well if you know Kristina Kelly, you know it would be in my best interest to give up the burgers, I got out of the shower and we laughed and ate until we were full. I retired before everyone else because I knew we had an early Sunday brunch scheduled at Union Station, a beautiful restaurant with a great show later on that evening headed up by Nina West (former Miss Entertainer of the Year). I got to meet Nina and her cast later on that night at Union Station… it was a blast as she was so kind and we actually took some time to converse and exchange numbers. I think I’ll be spending a lot of time at Union Station when I return for Miss Gay America 2011. If anyone knows Kristina Kelly, you know there wasn’t a dull moment with her… Sue Nami, Isis Deverreoux (Kristina’s Dresser and longtime friend), Josie Foster and many more, all at brunch with Mimosa’s. I enjoyed every moment with them. Aron made me feel like a princess in Ohio . Then it was time to tour the city of Columbus , Ohio . I can truly say Miss Gay America is going to be a blast in this city so if you were thinking about attending, make plans now, as it is going to be something to remember. My tour was great… with all the shops, galleries, food and entertainment… you will find all to be very fulfilling. I am a lover of ice cream and it is the reason my gown size has increased since Miss Gay America from a 4 to a 6 and the best homemade ice cream I’ve ever eaten, is at a place called Jenni’s, all located in an area called Short North in Columbus. I will also be frequenting there a lot during the competition this year. My Final Dinner inColumbus was at LEVEL and it was amazing. I can still taste the steak I had… I love the décor of this establishment as it was friendly and inviting and I am sure to return there too. Then it was a little bar hoping before It was time to turn in.
So now it is the next morning and my trip was coming to an end but not without me touring all the facilities that are being used for the 2011 competition… so before heading to the airport I met with the hotel staff management of events and conventions, toured the facilities scheduled to be used and then headed over to the location for the final night of competition, Wow! I was so pleased… I think this is going to be an amazing place and Miss Gay America 2011 is going to be an amazing event. I was then rushed to the airport after Aron and I completed our tours and he made sure I was all checked in, we said our goodbyes and said how we were looking forward to seeing each other again at Miss Gay Ohio America.
I write my letters so you can get a closer look at my journey as Miss Gay America and I am loving all the attention it’s receiving on the chat boards. Thank you all for reading and maybe when I’m done, you will have a better understanding and knowledge of what is incorporated with being Miss Gay America. We may all be different and choose different endeavors in life but it is when we learn to respect each other’s decisions and choices, we as a community will be able to unite and ask the rest of the world to respect us and give us the same rights as others... In my next letter I’ll tell you all about my trip to North Carolina with Tiffany Storm and the fabulous night spot Scorpio’s and my step down as Miss Gay Heart of America in St. Louis MO.
Until then,
Much Unity and Respect,
Coco Montrese

Miss Gay America 2010
July 2010
This month’s article starts off with a great bang because this was the month that we celebrate diversity and take pride in who we are as a people and a community. June is known all around the country as pride month because so many parades, festivals and block parties all happen during this month. I was able to visit the nation’s capital DC, my second home Baltimore MD , and St Petersburg / Tampa Florida my current home. I was excited about these trips because I’ve visited these cities before but never been present for their pride events. The colorful culture with rainbow flags, leather attire, fun, exotic, artistic, and cultured people these celebrations are filled with many messages. One message rings out more than any other, unity and acceptance. I’ll get to my experiences at all these events but first and foremost I want you all to understand what I got from these experiences and how I apply them to our pageant community. There are many pageant systems in our community and all are unique and different in many ways. Although we do posses differences we all embrace the art of performance. We all have different rules and regulations that make up who we are as a system, but just as we the gay community asks the world to accept us and respect us for our differences, those request we have should start at home in our own communities. These different pageantry systems give you, the artist, a choice in where you would like to compete, It is very important that we embrace our freedom to choose, however we as a community need to know and understand just that. Acceptance of each other and our choices is very important to our advancement as a community. With so many pageantry systems to choose from and thousands of entertainers across the country we should encourage our young entertainers to research and find the one that best fits them, pursue it, achieve it, and then if you’d like to explore more go ahead and learn and grow but always remember that if you cannot focus and concentrate on one goal at a time then it’s probably not in your heart and if it’s not in your heart you will not respect it and give it your all. I love all pageantry systems for different reasons. I made my choice and am very proud of my choice because it best fits me and my goals. If we all, promoters, sponsors, contestants and spectators learn to put aside our discrimination against other pageantry systems we aren’t involved in and embrace and support pageantry as a whole then and only then will our pageantry community be strong enough to be publicized on national television, get support and funding from major companies and society as a whole will take notice and
through our unity they will learn about an art form like no other. There is no strength in division. Just another topic for many of the chat boards to talk about.
So, I must say, with an invitation from Robert York, Jon Parks and the cast of Ziegfelds/Secrets, my first celebration of gay pride was in DC and it was a blast. John Kane promoter of Atlantic States and his Partner Matt were also a part of the wonderful welcome I received. I was so excited that the cast asked me to be a part of their production of a night of GLEE. The entire show on Friday was songs from the hit television show and it was so much fun to perform. Tatianna Voche’ put the whole show together, productions with dancers and props it was fabulous. My two favorite numbers in the show were Kristina Kelley performing “Bust the Windows out Your Car” and Jon Parks as Madonna in “Vogue”. It was a grand way to start the weekend. Saturday before the show I attended the parade but before I attended the parade I decide I’d grab something to eat in the hotel lobby restaurant. As I ordered my food the phone rang and it was my brother in Miami . (I come from a very loving, accepting, caring but religious family… my brothers are preachers and my parents were as well when they were alive.) He asked “Hey, where are you?” I replied I’m in DC at a pride event, he said “well I just wanted to call because I just spent the last hour and a half reading about you and Miss Gay America on the internet and I wanted to call you and tell you how proud of you I am, I love you and support you in all your dreams and endeavors.” I was speechless. My Pentecostal Pastor/ brother called to express his love and support. I had tears of joy rolling down my eyes. The acceptance of family is sometimes not something we all feel we need but even so when it is expressed it is definitely not something we turn away from. I then suddenly wasn’t hungry anymore. I knew I needed to eat because I had a long fun-filled night at Ziefeld’s again. I ate my food really fast and headed to Dupont circle to watch the festivities. It was so great to watch all the different organizations coming down the parade route and before I knew it, it was time to head to the bar and get ready for showtime. It was another great night with a fabulous show cast. Sunday came rapidly but it was time to rise and shine and put on make up in the A.M. First it was brunch arranged by John Kane at a wonderful place called the Mansion. I have never seen anything like this place in my life. If you are ever in D.C. this place is a place you must visit. The brunch was unbelievable a spread of food in every room. The historic and authentic place was filled with rooms and trapped doors behind bookshelves, hideaways and secret passages, I was very intrigued by this place when I return to DC hope I’ll get a chance to stay there. The brunch was something I could have done all day but there was a festival on Pennsylvania Avenue and thanks to Miss DC Pride Destiny B Childs, I was schedule to perform on the main stage where the backdrop was the Capitol Building . To perform on the main stage at DC pride was a surreal experience. The energy on the street was electrifying. Then Sunday night at Ziefeld’s was another night filled with fun. We shared the stage with Frenchie Davis, an amazing recording artist with a great down to earth personality. This was our third time working together and it was amazing to hear her voice again. As this weekend came to a close my trip wouldn’t be complete without a visit to Omega on a Monday night, I enjoy working there with Big Daddy and all the girls. I always have a good time there. Let my hair down and enjoy. My trip to DC wouldn’t have been possible without Robert York, Jon Parks, Ziegfeld’s and John Kane, thank you guys for showing me DC Pride. After a great week in DC it was time to go to another place I like to call my second home. Baltimore , Maryland , I love this place for several reasons. Roger Dimick and Chuck Bowers of the Hippo know how to make you feel right at home and during gay pride you are going to see several rainbows, but none like the ones you’ll see in Baltimore . I think what I love about Baltimore the most is that they love and respect the title of Miss Gay America but they also get to know you the person and in many ways remind you and allow you to be that normal human being as well. Many get caught up with the title and don’t allow you to experience being a person too. As a person you smile, laugh, cry, hurt, bleed and emotions are a part of who we all are. My experiences in Baltimore allow me to remember I am a person first. Spending time with Sue Nami-Miss Maryland2009 and Onyx Revlon –Miss Maryland 2010 was great I really enjoyed my time with them. Sue Nami and I always had a bond from the day we met. Onyx and I can truly say we are sisters down to the core. I loved performing at Bingo night at Hippo and riding in the parade was amazing. Performing at the block party was the best. On Sunday, the festival in the park was so much fun too. Performing at the different stages was great and even though it was well in the 90’s and HOTT TT, it was all worth it. Thank you to Lady Lisa who I am so glad I got a chance to meet , if you ever have an event and need me, just say the word and I’m there. MyMaryland family was great. Every time I’m in Maryland I get to experience some place new and this time it was Bunns… and all I can say about this establishment is that I will always pay them a visit when I’m in town. Sunday evening I got to perform at the block party hosted by Club Bunns, along with many entertainers like Tommie Ross, Amaylia Black, Onyx Revlon and Helena Hologram, Eric Rainbow, Ivana Black and The men of Rainbow, ( Roy and Marlowe). Marlowe just want to say thank you for showing me a great time in Baltimore , you were a gentleman and know how to treat a queen. Congrats on your system International INC. I wish you much success. I am just a phone call away. Sushi Nami (Justin/ Sue Nami’s Daughter)I had a great time at the harbor and the gallery shopping and eating with you, I look forward to our days out and about. Philip and Chris and Maddy thank you for again opening your home to me. Roger Josie, Tia and the gang, thank you for your great hospitality and most of all true friendship.
True friends are hard to find. You meet many people while on the road and sometimes they don’t turn out to be the person they portrayed and that is definitely ok, it’s when they don’t own up to who they are and allow you to make decision to accept or reject them, then and only then you will know their true intentions weren’t your friendship for who you are but friendship because of what you posses. That hurts, but its growing pains of life on the road. Smile and care for them still because that’s how you remain the person you are. (Just another lesson learned on the road) You know who you are; I’m still here, a real friend. I must say inMaryland I have a family and during pride family is important!
Next I was headed home to St. Pete/ Tampa Florida … this was a very welcoming homecoming and I didn’t know they’d miss me so much. It was also pride week there. My boss, at the flamingo Resort, where I am on show cast called to inform me that I wouldn’t be on the float with the rest of the cast. I was Kind of shocked but he continued to say Miss Gay America is going to be riding in her own convertible in front of the float. I was just overjoyed. This was the best welcome home I had ever received. Miss Gay America was home. A native Floridian, still living in Florida had never received the honor of being Miss Gay America and St Petersburg /Tampa Florida wanted to celebrate that during pride week. My weekend began at the Honeypot in Tampa Ybor City , Steve Moss and Steven Donhue the owners of this establishment always welcome me home with open arms… Toby the show director and all the girls I work with there are a blast. This weekend the Friday cast was special to me because I got to work with Alexis Mateo my long time friend and the one responsible for making me look decent, (as she would call it) at Miss Gay America years past. Esme Russell my mentor, the wise one, and Alisa Summers, Miss Florida USofA newcomer, a young girl who’s willingness to listen and learn is going to help mold her a promising career. Also my friend Jade (Rupauls Drag race season1) she loves trips to Disney ALL DAY LONG!!! It was a great night with a 10 am parade in the morning. It was well worth it. This parade route had many families on it and it was very touching. Then it was followed by great shows at the Flamingo Resort and a Sunday Tea Dance out of this world. It was good to be back at home.
As Miss Gay America sometimes people don’t get to hear of your joy and pain, but these experiences, are the things that make us human.
A few days before I wrote this I experienced one of the most painful things I’ve ever had to endure and that was losing my puppy… he was poisoned by something he digested and his kidney’s were failing. The selfish part of me wanted them to try and save him after the doctor said there was nothing they could do but watching him suffer and having to put him down was more than I could bear. I never thought as Miss Gay America there would be a moment in my reign where I would turn off my phone and not accept phone calls but this was one day I was reminded that we are people first. I love my FENDI and his sister P RADA will miss him but he’s taught me not to take what we have for granted, I‘m just glad I was home to say my goodbye’s.
As I traveled this month I learned one thing, the power of unity is very strong. If people learn to accept each other and unite, the gay community would be a very powerful force. Until then we will still struggle and fight for our human rights to live the lives we deserve.

Miss Gay America 2010
August 2010
Wow!! The past two months have been a whirl wind for me and no matter how much I try to be accurate and document all the wonderful and trying moments in my reign, I somehow seem to have left out two of the most exciting adventures last month. I was so emotional with the passing of my Chihuahua Fendi, God rest his soul, I didn’t write about my fabulous trip to North Carolina and my step down as Miss Gay Heart of America 2009 so here it goes…
I was invited to North Carolina to perform at Scorpios and lucky for me my schedule at the time allowed for me to accept. Tiffany Storm and the crew made sure this was an absolute blast for me. The community there was one of the most welcoming and accepting communities for which I have crossed paths. Scorpios is AMAZING!! As I was whisked away to the dressing room my first night, then given the tour of the club, we passed a glass incased wall with framed pictures of former Miss Gay Americas from the Carolina’s and Miss North Carolina Americas as well as past MGA crowns, scepters, dolls, awards, and other MGA memorabilia. This was breathtaking. I was so taken back when I realized that my picture was framed and included in there display case. I was so excited! I was finally going to get the chance to perform with my MGA sister Luscious. This is so special to me because she was the Miss Gay America who placed my first city crown on my head and returned back to Florida that same year and crowned me Miss Gay Florida America (my first Miss Gay America state title). We had not had a chance to communicate since my reign had begun due to both our busy schedules. This was also important because it was the night before she was to leave for her competition at Miss US of A. The show both nights were spectacular. All the girls were so sweet including my good friend Deidra Pinucci, Miss North Carolina America 2009. She is just a doll! Watching Luscious perform reminded me of why I chose MGA to be my system to compete in. We performed to a packed house filled with people who loved to be entertained. After we were done, with the lateness of the hour and a 7am flight to catch to compete herself (Luscious) at US of A, Luscious took the time to sit and talk with me sister to sister to find out how I was doing and to offer me her first hand knowledge and to welcome me to the MGA sisterhood. To have someone as talented as her tell me 3 years ago that soon I too would be Miss Gay America, then to sit before her in present time and embrace as sisters in the system was surreal. Tiffany Storm, Betty Boo, and all the North Carolina clan (or should I say crew) made my stay amazing. I look forward to my return to North Carolina real soon!
This next trip was an emotional rollercoaster spending most of my MGA journey with these next two individuals was solely the reason for my success. Mike Divoky and Rodney Brown, owners of Miss Gay Heart of America and permanent residences in my heart were my gift given to me by God. I was lucky enough to have them as promoters two years of my three year MGA journey. As Miss Heart of America 2008 first alternate I was given the opportunity grow and learn what I needed to know about the system to be successful. Win or lose if you’re a part of their family and you’re treated all the same. They won’t make the decisions for you but help you develop your vision and bring it to life. After holding my hand through my 2nd year at MGA they had no clue as to if I would return to Heart of America, but I knew that I would that very next year because I don’t know one kid who would give up such great parents. I returned the following year as if it was my first time just because I was first alternate the year before I wasn’t going to return thinking they owed me anything. I came back to win. Focused and overcoming obstacles like lost luggage that finally shows up the day of the pageant and my most negative trait, second guessing myself, I show up with my best friend Alexis Mateo at my side saying “Girl stay still while I’m trying to do your hair” or “you know you look a mess, you aint winning this pageant mama cause you not pretty Lenny” all in her Puerto Rican accent. Well she was wrong… I did win and of course she replied “Girl I knew you was winning dis pageant cause I was doing your hair!!” I laughed but I was grateful because now I was truly sisters with formers like Charity Case, Rachael Erikks, Sasha Nicole, Jade Sinclair and Vicki Vincent just to name a few. Learning the history put me one step closer to my main goal and I now possessed all the tools I needed to become Miss Gay America. Just to clarify though, it’s not all that sad I did end up with another wonderful set of parents, and yes I’ll call them dads if I want to (chat boards) because my biological parents are deceased. I even got my own room with my very own TV!! LOL
As usual, the flight touched down in St. Louis and they were there to meet and greet me. That’s when it hit me… “oh my God I’m really giving it up”. Just as eager as I was last year, my first alternate Sasha Leigh Chambers had been grooming herself and asking many questions calling me in the middle of the night preparing herself for this year’s showdown at Heart of America. Thank God I showed up the night before she as I needed rest, tee hee hee, just kidding.. Instead of a review show this year (they figured they had seen enough of me performing this year), there was a dinner in my honor at the beautiful home of Tumara Mahorning, prepared by her mother whom I have become close to. She reminds me so much of my own mother when she was alive. This was some of the best home cooked food I’d had in a very long time. Completely exhausted from the plane ride and full, I decided to retire back to the hotel and prepare for the next day that was to be filled with double duties as Miss Heart of America 2009 and Miss Gay America 2010. The next day was filled with excitement as I was interviewed by Colin Murphy from Vital Voice and then, Pageant Pageant Pageant Time. All the formers wore their favorite Lady Gaga attire and the contestants dressed in their favorite celebrity chased by the paparazzi. It was a great night. As I was speaking to the crowd during my greeting I began to speak of Mike and Rodney and I became really choked up and began to cry. Wow! where did that come from? I was telling myself inside “be a man, don’t cry” ha ha ha. As I spoke, my voice became deeper and deeper. So much for my illusion lol. This pageant had great contestants but in the end, my first alternate Sasha Leigh Chambers stood tall as the new Miss Gay Heart of America 2010 with another wonderfully talented competitor as her first alternate Sally Sparkles. Chantel Reshae as second alternate was also wonderfully talented. I passed on my title but will always be Miss Gay Heart of America 2009.
My stay in St. Louis wasn’t over. I was asked by Joe Bradley owner of Miss Midwest America and Miss Gay Missouri Continental if I would stay over and judge and entertain at his prelim for Continental. With my love for all systems, the elegance and class that Miss Continental represents and the many friends I hold dear to my heart who have won titles in this system, I was honored to even be asked. It was a wonderful night of pageantry. Earlier that day I was joined by Ashley Cruz and Dominique Chapelle, and the reigning Miss Continental Armani, who is a long time friend. This was so ironic since both of our crownings, we had not had the chance to see or speak to each other and we both live in Orlando Florida . It was nice to share this moment with my friend Dominique, former Miss Continental and reigning Miss Black America. She has been a friend of mine since my college years in Alabama at Club 21 in Birmingham and Ho Johns Montgomery where we worked together back in 19…well never mind. It was also very nice to share this moment with Ashley Cruz as well, someone I admired for years and fell in love with on the spot. I thought it was great that a group of national title holders from many different systems could sit and have brunch together and catch up on old times, compare systems in a different but healthy way, asking questions to better understand each other’s choices and different paths in pageantry yet still respecting each other’s decisions. That was a brunch meant for viewing on cable TV. Logo Channel in fact, I think I’ll give them a call. Thank you Joe Bradley and his partner Howard, of the Complex for taking us to brunch. That night was filled with excitement seeing old friends like my Aunty Jodie Santana, Kitty Litter, Camille Simpson, Amaya Mann, and Vicky Valentino just to name a few. I want to personally say thank you. Jim Flint who was in attendance for giving me such a wonderful warm welcome. It was an honor to be in your presence and to judge Miss Missouri Continental. Good Luck to Fontasia Lamore and Tiffany Hunter at Miss Continental. Leaving there, heading home to Tampa Florida for one of my biggest birthday bashes ever. I arrived with just enough time to plan the celebration, a V.I.P. private party at one of the hottest clubs in Tampa Florida , the Honey Pot in Ybor City . Thank you to the staff there as I had everything I needed for one of the grandest celebrations I have ever had. With only a limited time to party, the weekend continued at my home bar, the Flamingo Resort.
Before you knew it the weekend was over and it was time to head back to work. Harrisburg Pennsylvania was my next stop for Miss Gay Pennsylvania America with promoter Michelle Sterling. This was a grand event. The contestants in this state were hungry for the knowledge to succeed. The undiscovered talent in Pennsylvania was immense. Preliminary nights were so exciting…it made me look forward to final night. I shared that weekend with all the formers and a few of my Miss Gay America Sisters like Nicole Dubois, Rachael Erikks, and of course Victoria DePaula. I knew I was surrounded by family. Special thanks to Liquid in Harrisburg for your great hospitality and to Elektra Fierce St. James. It was good to know you cherished every moment down to your final farewell performance as Miss Pennsylvania . At the end of a great weekend Mirage Jolie was crowned Miss Gay Pennsylvania 2010 after a powerful performance that couldn’t be forgotten.
After a beautiful crowning ceremony with many tear jerking moments, it was time to fly back home not to rest but to preside over the very first state title I have ever held in the Miss Gay America system… Miss Gay Florida America . Less than 24 hours after crowning Miss Pennsylvania I stood in Orlando Florida at the Parliament House resort in the Footlight Theater conducting contestant and judge’s orientation. It felt weird being in a place called home in this capacity. Being that I held this very same title and it was my first ticket to MGA, I stood there as a former contestant and now the current Miss Gay America. For a moment I became very emotional but had to pull myself together so the contestants wouldn’t think I was crazy Lol. Promoter Will Pappas from KnoxvilleTennessee was on hand making sure this contest ran smoothly. As I looked over the judge’s panel I saw many individuals who were an asset to my career. One in particular Darcel Stevens show director at the Parliament House Resort. She played a major role in my success not only in pageantry but in the business of Female Impersonation. I owe a lot to her. When others said no she always said so. With her help that night, Florida America went off without a hitch. It was nice to see formers Chantel Reshae, Amber Mills, Daphne Ferraro, and Crystal Chambers entertaining once again. My dresser that night Chris from Tampa was amazing. Unpacking, packing and unpacking again the entire overweight luggage I tend to bring but all without complaint. Chrissy one of the best stage managers that ever lived was on hand to run the show. Four great contestants with two great representatives Alisha Coleman Miss Florida America 2010 and Jessica Deveraux as 1st alternate. Their preparations for Miss Gay America 2011 started immediately that night after competition. With just only two days to breathe it was almost time to head to Ohio for Miss Gay Ohio America. In my next article I will tell you all about the city of Columbus Ohio and Miss Gay Ohio America and the emotional step down of Symphony Alexander Love. In the words of my most accurate assistants Tanya and Christina “do you need anything, are you ok?” My response “YES A V8”. Also Miss Gay Missouri America, a grand pageant with tradition and legacy as being the 2nd oldest preliminary to Miss Gay America and Miss Gay Arizona America in a heat index of 110 degrees. Until then my fellow Americans does anyone have any No-doze ?!
Until then,

Miss Gay America 2010
September 2010
As my days and nights run together, the only way I can tell the beginning from the end is by the rise and setting of the sun. I set out to continue my journey with more stops than a greyhound bus driving across country.
My return to Columbus Ohio for their State Preliminary was well awaited. Once again I was in the city where I will pass on my title to your next Miss Gay America 2011. I was greeted by TEAM CoCo once again, Tonya and Kristina. And once again Kristina’s famous words were “Do you need anything, are you okay?” It felt good to know I was back there. This was a great State Pageant; Symphony Alexander Love was passing on the title of Miss Gay Ohio America. Several great contestants and many old friends. Aron Aranda and his crew put on a GREAT production of true pageantry. There were many stops at my new favorite places like; Torsos, Levels and Jennies Homemade Ice Cream. Then I got to see some of my favorite people in Ohio , but I am smart enough not to name names. The contestants were many and their faces were fresh and new. I was very excited to see what they all planned to bring to the table. In the final results there stood Diamond Hunter as your new Miss Gay Ohio America with Ali Kat as 1st Alternate. As we all know Symphony is a tough act to follow, and after such an emotional and moving final number, as well as an amazing year as Miss Gay Ohio America, the shoes she left are of great size to fill. But with the drive and determination I see in Diamond Hunter, I expect nothing less than a stellar year.
As time flew past it was time to head back to Missouri , but this time it was Springfield MO , this was the location for Miss Gay Missouri America, the 2nd oldest Miss Gay America Preliminary. It was great to see many formers like Jade Sinclair, Erica Lee Foster, Sparkle Iman, Ali Kat, and many more. It was a weekend at Martha’s Vineyard I will never forget. These contestants were sharp and this pageant put my administrative skills to the test. There were many returning contestants as well. The classy Erica Fox was relinquishing her title. By the end of the contest, Nikki Stevens was crowned the new Miss Gay Missouri America with Tajma Stetson as 1st Alternate. They are both well prepared to stun us all at Miss Gay America this year. After finishing my duties in Springfield , it was time to head home, but only for one day.
Then it was time to head out to Arizona for Miss Gay Arizona America. Well how hot could it really be in Arizona ? Put it this way, if you wanted scrambled eggs and bacon all you needed was a side walk and no frying pan, and that was at night. Through all the heat, Daniel Eckstrom managed to put on one (BLEEP) of a pageant. I spent my time outside of pageantry at Low Low’s Chicken and Waffles and on several occasions I was a repeat performer there. And the SAS Fabric Store is one of my favorites in the country. Mia Aolams, Eolward, and Nikki were great tour guides and to Nikki thank you for saving my life on several occasions; don’t think I could have done it without you.
I was all the way in Arizona from Florida and joined by my best friend and pageant partner for years, Alexis Mateo. Dressing me at Miss Gay America and being there for all three years of this journey it was special to be with her while out on the road. I was also joined by my MGA Sister Nicole Dubois who is just so much fun to be around… we performed and shopped together all week; it was a blast.
Preliminary night was at the Rock where the staff and management are always wonderful with Miss Tajma Hall and Nicole Dubois on the mic you know that Miss Gay America had to keep the pageant rolling. This was a fabulous night. Then it was time for final night competition. It was one of the most beautiful performing arts centers I had ever laid my eyes on. Daniel went all out of his way for this one. This Tempee Center for Performing Arts made a wonderful backdrop for a beautiful and stellar queen like TC Taylor to pass on her title. TC was not only a beauty during her reign but a pillar in the community, raising a very large amount of money for many charities and also being the symbol of excellence for Arizona. So she left very big shoes to fill for the next Miss Gay Arizona America. After fourteen years of dedication to becoming Miss Gay Arizona, Celebrity Starr was crowned the new Miss Gay Arizona America with Tyra Marie as her 1st Alternate.
Leaving Arizona I headed to Las Vegas NV for a 3 day mini business vacation. I was once again joined by my longtime friend Alexis Mateo, for a quick break from pageantry with a little tanning by the pool at City Centers Luxury Resort, VDARA, on the Las Vegasstrip. We got to spend lots of time with my friends at the Divas Show and Miss Gay America Hot Chocolate (Larry Edwards),Kenneth Blake and (CoCo Vega), and the entire cast. Did a little real estate shopping and enjoyed the time off with a little work here and there.
As my mini vacation came to an end it was time to head back to work for the two pageants in two days weekend. First up was Miss Gay Illinois in Carbendale , Illinois . Promoter Jade Sinclair had a great pageant with many great competitors, it was awesome. Mariah Candy was passing on her title; it was a fun filled night. I got to spend time with my Auntie Jodie Santana and many other friends in the business like Anita Mann and Kara Belle. At the end of the night your new Miss Gay Illinois was Tabitha Saxton and Dymond-Champagne Calloway was your 1st Alternate.
In my next article I’ll tell you about my experiences at Miss Gay Midwest America , the show at the Bastille, Miss Gay Arkansas America, and Miss Gay North Carolina, and the showdown with 6 MGA’s in one building. I’m racing now to catch a flight, gotta run, so until next month; think and be excellence.
Until then,
Much Unity and Respect,

Miss Gay America 2010
October 2010
This Pageant season has spun into a whirlwind and pageants are happening so fast I cant keep up, I'll pick up were I left off in my last article, I was on my way to Miss Midwest America with Joe Bradley at The Complex, this was a wonderful pageant to attend. I enjoyed the company of a few old friends like Alana Steele and Vicki Valentino, Dieta Pepsi as they were alot of fun. Joe Bradley knows how to put on a pageant. Trixie Larue came out on top as your new Miss Midwest America and Crystal Lace wasn't far behind in the 1rst Alternate spot as both succeeded at their 2nd shot at a ticket to the nationals this pageant season. Good luck to them both. Fresh, exciting, new talents and evening gowns are what is being presented all cross the country from these competitors and that is going to make for a very exciting pageant finals in Ohio . No bathroom breaks this year… so get ready for an exciting event.
Next stop was Arkansas, this was a pageant that I was very excited to attend as its the oldest preliminary to Miss Gay America and with a lot of history and tons of former Miss Arkansas's returning, and this was gonna be a blast. With the pageant being operated by the Alumni Board I got a chance to see sisterhood at it's best… This was a great great experience for me. As I entered the venue Discovery for the first day of competition for registration and orientation, I had to take a moment and collect myself, as this was the first place I had ever experienced a Miss Gay America pageant. I was a dresser for Chantel Reshae many years ago in that very same building watching people like Nina Deangelo, Shae Shae La Reese and Josephine O'Hara compete and just saying to myself, “I wanna do this pageant one day”. I was having a moment but I pulled it together and conducted business as usual. The crowd was amazing during all nights of competition and the formers pulled out all the stops on stage. The contestants once again were fresh and new, to bring to the stage, a new feel of creativity with talents. Shawn Tyler Andrews stood out the most in the judges eyes and mine, and was awarded the title of Miss Gay Arkansas America with Morgan McCall as first alternate, I'm excited to see them both at the nationals in October but the highlight of my trip to Arkansas was a 15 minute conversation with the very first Miss Gay America Norma Kristie. As I stood there in my crown talking with the person who wore the very first one…it was surreal, I thought I'd be nervous or at a lost for words but I wasn't… everything I wanted to say flowed right off my tongue, and I listened to every word he had to say. We spoke of the past, his journey and even his night of competition at Miss Gay America. We spoke of the present and shared both of our plans for the future, which he, for some reason already knew my plans for the future… (one of my MGA sisters couldn't keep her mouth shut, ha ha...Hot Chocolate of course) Our conversation ended with my thank you to him for believing enough in the crown he wore to keep it alive for so many years and passing it on to people who believe in it just as much as he did. With tears of joy Mike Divoky and I headed back to the hotel, but of course the paparazzi was waiting outside the club and wanted pictures and even when its 4am and you're tired, its a good feeling to know people approve of the job you've done in their State.
Now its on to North Carolina … Charlotte to be exact… Miss Gay North Carolina America, I can truly say, that they take pride in the system and their contestants. The promoters pull out all the stops in NC. These contestants we treated like gold… Big Southern Meals at registration. I'm shocked every contestant could fit in their gowns after being fed so well. They all listened attentively in Orientation because lunch was served directly after it was over. Dedra Pinucci was passing on her title. The hospitality was great as Tiffany Storm and Betty Boo, my personal assistants were on top of everything. Also having a group of contestants, some old, some new to the system but all eager to learn more, stood out among the rest. Lets see, we had a slew of MGA's at this pageant.. Catia, Rachael, Luscious, Tiffany Bonet, Victoria DePaula and many north Carolina formers were there too. It was a week to remember, especially for Emory Starr and Angela Lopez, they both received their ticket to Miss Gay America with Emory as your New Miss North Carolina and Angela as 1rst alternate.
After that great pageant ended I spent a week in the area trying to get some work done before Miss Mid East that following weekend, so Rachael and I stayed in town and I caught up on some of my administrative work for my employer L&T… and then it was off to the fabric store… Mary Jo's, all I can say is WOW and a couple of $$$$ later and 4 hours of one store, they had to call UPS cause it wouldn't fit in the car. I was pooped so we got some rest and then it was off to dinner with Mike Rhinehart and Della who is the local celebrity in NC, at the worlds greatest soul food place called Merts. Then, it was time to see the touring cast of Mary Poppins in a downtown theater, thanks to Della, for getting us the best seats in the house, complimentary VIP… Della you are the best. It was amazing. Ok with Mid East approaching rapidly it was time to get back to work. Tatianna Voch'e was on her way into town to give up her title and she had this big Lady GaGa and Beyonce opening planned… I didn't understand why I couldn't be Lady GaGa instead of beyonce!! (smile)Oh well… Pageant day was here and I was Beyonce at her request and with 20mins of rehearsal, I learned the choreography and her opening went off without a hitch. Mid East was a great pageant and Mike did a great job promoting it. It was good to see the Ohio crew there, Aron Aranda, Miss Ohio Diamond Hunter, Hellin Bed and Rusty… they were all in attendance. My sister Luscious joined me that night as Lead Judge. It was great spending time with her. Jessica Jade (my MGA2010 first alternate) came and claimed her spot for the nationals as Miss Gay Mid East America with Dior Douglas another force to be reckoned with at nationals as 1st alternate. Thank you Mike Rhinehart for a smooth and consistent pageant.
Then with no sleep as it was on to Virginia for the Next Miss Gay Virginia Regional pageant! I stepped of the plane right into pageant preparation and no time for a nap. I must say, I enjoyed helping Wayne Doggett pull this off… with little cooperation from this venue which will remain nameless due to legal matters (don't wanna get sued…ha!). This pageant was actually exciting to watch. The contestants were from all over but the home girl Lacountress Farrington pulled out all the stops to capture the title as this was her second try at a ticket to nationals this year. She competed at Miss DC Regional and decided we shouldn't count her out just yet… so she went to critics and came back with a winning package… and in the words of Lacountress “we can learn from anybody old and new". Jessica Raynes Starr is the proud 1st alternate as she too was determined to earn her spot after 3 attempts in 1 week, North Carolina , Mid East and then Virgina… in fact, just a few hours after her at the Mid East critics she packed, got on the road and her determination paid off. It's great to see contestants with such a driving force to make it to Miss Gay America in Ohio .
Is it time to sleep yet?... No as now it was on to Miss Gay Atlantic States in DC at Ziegfelds with John Kane and Matt Minnier. The pageant was also sponsored by a beautiful place call the Mansion on O Street . It was a residence fit for a queen… my stay there was relaxing and very comfortable, with secret doors and a wine cellar hidden in the main kitchen. This was truly a breathtaking experience with a lot of history. Other past residents include Rosa Parks and John Lennon. I was in the International Suite. After a slight nap and lunch it was back to Pageant mode. This pageant was well organized and put together with a great prize package. The opening was about wishes and them coming true… It was dreamy. Tatyanna Voche’ was your new Miss Gay Atlantic States and Miss D. Meaner as 1st alternate as both will turn it out at nationals… cant wait to see them both. The day after at the Mansion, we performed a private dinner for the club members of the Mansion on O street as it was a show with various entertainers like Patti Lovelace as Reba, Tommie Ross as Diana Ross , Monet Dupree as Tina Turner and Michelle Sterling as Queen of the Damn. Tatiyanna Voche’ as Tatiana and myself in the illusion of Whitney Houston, It was a very upscale classy event for a group of people outside of our community. This was a time to use my platform to educate them on the art of female Illusion and why we do it, the celebration of women and expressing ourselves through this art form is how I explained to them our purpose in what we do. It was an evening of glamour and class.
With just little time to relax and just a few more prelims to go, I spent time at my homes away from homes in Baltimore, DC, Omega, Ziegfields, the Hippo and of course Bunns. The president of the United States has Camp David, I've got my favoriteBaltimore 's establishment Bunns. After attending the city prelim Miss Glamour Girl in Baltimore it was on to Miss Gay Tennessee America in Memphis . It was good to be there in the capacity of Miss Gay America and very special because I was also in attendance last year as the dresser for Anita Cocktail/Rodney brown who captured the title and was now passing it on. The is a great moment especially with me being his Heart of America daughter I was honored to watch him achieve his dream as he returned the gesture by watching me capture mine as well. I got to spend time with my parents L&T even though it was brief but I got to sleep in my room and my MGA bed… it was occupied on my last visit by Raquel Chevalier who forgot what year it was, 2005? No 2010 and it was my turn to sleep in my room, well at least for a nap and keep the tradition alive. All in all the new promoters of Tennessee Tami Montgomery and Kevin Fuller did an incredible job and Ashlyn Tyler won the title of Miss Gay Tennessee America 2010, as she was amazing and Pat MaCooter was 1st alternate. This pageant was entertaining and ran like clock work with an elaborate set on stage in a cocktail bar with the MC Terry Eason, hosting from behind the bar! Was this an Americaprelim? All the contestants wore fabulous Cocktail dresses for the opening… all that was left was to call Grey Goose for sponsorship!
With only 4 more preliminaries to go it was time to head back to DC to Judge Miss Ziegfleds and for a holiday weekend of Labor Day fun with the ladies of Illusion and Jon Parks. Then it was off to Chicago for Miss Continental… and thank you to John Kane and Joe Bradley for making that trip to Continental for the National walk possible. I flew in, hopped on the train and was greeted by an old friend and competitor China Collins, who guided me around Chicago and helped me arrive safely at my mother Mokha Montrese's home. Thinking I'd finally get a moment of sleep, I was greeted by her at the door and she had that Montrese pageant mode look on her face and I knew what that meant… it was time to break out the rhinestones and finish her shoes and gown, and everything else for final night, Mike and Andre of Fat Boy Productions who started both of our careers in the back of their gown shop in Montgomery Alabama were there sewing away. It was good to see them both again and soon my brothers arrived… Marsean the oldest (I like saying the oldest cause actually I am) and the newest addition to the family Luiz. It was time for the family meeting and once the meeting was adjourned it was time to put “work in operation tp get the crown” into effect. I've always loved having a drag mother who never dictated who I should be as an entertainer or how I should look, or what system I would compete in… she let me make the decisions on my own and then helped me develop my vision of who I want to be. She did this so there would be no carbon copy of her in the industry but one who could carry the name with their own flare. I look at our family like the Jackson family as there are not many Montrese's but they are power houses… we don't see each other that much but know our connection is there… Well, that evening went as planned, as I took the national walk, I was proud to say I am Miss Gay America 2010 Coco Montrese. This was the only national walk I was able to attend due to my preliminary schedule this year, but this one turned out extra special because my mother was crowned the new Miss Continental 2011 and her daughter, the reigning Miss Gay America 2010 was present to see it. Also a former Disney co worker and my private dance instructor, Nick Gray captured the title Mr. Continental. My long time friend and confidant Armani was stepping down and I can truly say working with her and 1st alternate Sassy Divine at the Parliament House in Orlando Florida is always a pleasure, I've got good friends in many different systems. DeeRanged and Nina West EOY, Asia Ohara and Stasha Sanchez and Dominique Sanchez (former Miss Gay America 2003) USof A, Roxxy Andrews a close friend and current reigning Continental Plus. These are the friendships that break down the barriers of systems divide. We all have a different way of doing things and we are all free to choose and pick the one we want to commit to, so when the choice is made, complete the task and respect each other for their choices even if their choices aren’t the same as yours. Whatever the system, the common goal is still the same perfection in the art of female Impersonation.
Now back on the road to my last few preliiminaries, Tri States with Reba , back in Kansas City for my second trip there as this was a great experience… the pageant was really smooth but the day went very fast. I think it was the Mexican food I ate the night before with the Margaritas I was having, virgin I might add... Deja Brooks did such a wonderful job all year and Jade Sinclar, my Heart of America sister was crowned the new Miss Tri States America and her 1st alternate, a newcomer to the Miss Gay America system Dakota Riviera was 1st alternate… Finally!... a little rest after this pageant before my flight home for Gulf States .
I flew back home into Tampa for Miss Gulf States America Regional which was held in St Petersburg , Florida . This was fun, joined by Lucinda Holiday as the host and 3 lovely former Miss Gay Americas on the panel of Judges, Patti Le Plae Safe, Maya Montana, and Raquel Chaevlier, I felt at ease here at home with their presence as this was another smooth sailing prelim. Great contestants and a very different crowd of spectators who were all so fabulous to the entertainers. Long time MGA contestant Chantel Reshae captured the title and Patti Lovelace was 1st alternate… both with fresh new talents to put Gulf States on the map, again at MGA, with it's first year back in a few years. Hats off to new promoter Ron Hernandez for a great evening of pageantry.
Louisiana was next… what can I say about a pageant that is 17 contestants strong and a group of formers who came back and made a long lasting impression on me? It was a wonderful experience in Louisianna, my sister Raquel was on hand as Lead Judge for the festivities. Bambi Baxtor was a beautiful Barbie girl completing her theme. I loved this group of formers as they were all on point making sure the pageant ran like clock work… my dresser Dillon had me together on and off stage. Promoter Paul Lasseigne, put on a great pageant and in the end stood, Zhane Kennedy as Miss Gay Louisiana America 2010 and Delaney Valentine as 1st alternate.
Then it was on to my final Preliminary as Miss Gay America 2010 which was Miss Texas America in Dallas Texas . It was a great time in Dallas . This contest was at the Round Up, a place I'd been many times before. Many of my old friends dropped in to see me like Whitney Page Asia O’hara, Silkie Monroe as they all came to give me their love and support. Tara Dion and Claudia Foster were the life of the pageant as such great hosts. Onyx was stepping down and was a beauty every night. After 13 years Gizelle Bevon Ashton was finally your new Miss Gay Texas America 2010 and Contessa Piranha as 1st alternate. This ended my pageant season on the road and I can truly say what a journey I'll never forget., the next letter I will write to you will be as a former Miss Gay America but always Miss Gay America 2010, I've gotta a lot of work to do up until then but I just wanna say, I hope threw this news article you the public, were able to experience this journey with me. I wouldn't have traded this journey for the world…
Till then remember... we are one!
