A Smooth Year….
(as published in The Excellence Newsletter-September 2006)

While we recognize that there has been a bump or two, along the way (with contestants and promoters), leading to the crown of Miss Gay America 2007, we must say that this has been a relatively smooth year. We are not sure if the reason is that the country knows what L & T Entertainment expects from titleholders and promoters… or if the overall level of professionalism has escalated. Either way, we are pleased with what we call, “the new crop”. The veterans of this system certainly provide the stability that this system has enjoyed for many, many years but the “new crop” brings enthusiasm and understanding that may have not always been present with the veterans. Also, the veterans have pioneered in many areas to pave a better way of competition.

Let’s face it…a part of why we all do what we do, for this system, has to stem from love for the art form and a desire to make life better for those who strive so hard to entertain us through their craft. We could change the rules of qualification and double the number of contestants within a year but we too realize that this contest is much deeper than numbers (contestants, preliminaries and dollars). Do not misconstrue… those things are very important, especially when there are so many across the country, that invest a great amount of money, hours and energy to see the continued success of this system. But, this system is known for its discipline and those who become successful in this system are known to be the “best of the best”. The rules remain rigid to keep you, whether you are a promoter, contestant, or audience member, focused on the complexity involved with winning the coveted title of Miss Gay America.

While we are selective of who is granted the privilege to be a promoter, we are delighted that most of the new promoters that have joined the Miss Gay America family, for this contest season are professional, business oriented and passionate about their contribution to further the art of female impersonation, in a positive light. It is not always easy to keep contestants grounded, but the current group of promoters, have high expectations and want to succeed in their part of the world. When unified and showing support of each other in this system, the Miss Gay America pageant lives on and thus the reputation of being the pinnacle in the art of female impersonation is validated. Yes, there has been a few disciplinary actions levied, during this contest season but all in all, the quality of both the promoters and contestants is on the rise. Without a good promoter, the contestants will have difficulty in realizing success and without a good contestant (titleholder), the promoter will have much more difficulty in realizing success. The interpretation of the word “good” goes deeper than being a quality entertainer or a financially stable promoter. It is the other characteristics that makes the individual successful including integrity, professionalism, on-stage presence, off-stage presence, ability to make sound judgments that are in the best interest of the pageant system and perseverance to “weather” a storm to know that the stability is there and when it is all said and done, you can look back and say…”that was a good thing to do”.

We know that the year is not yet concluded and that there are about 7 preliminaries remaining, but we already realize that the overall quality of pageantry within the Miss Gay America pageant system has improved.

We are already looking forward to the Miss Gay America 2008 season and are thankful that each person, who reads this article, is interested in the Miss Gay America pageant system…

Until next time…
