A dream is a wish your heart makes! Well my wish
came true when I was crowned Miss Gay America 2008 last week... Who would have
ever thought five years ago, I’d be Miss Gay America. My spark to begin the
art of female impersonation began in 2001… I was a freshman in college at The
University of Buffalo in New York. It was all a dare to see which boy could
become the prettiest female out of a group of five of us. Well needless to say
the “bug” bit me and I have been doing it ever since. I began to take in
every little piece of advice I could use to transform and help me grow. “I
had a lot of potential”, they said and just needed to work on the craft. Five
years later all my hard work and struggles have paid off, as I was crowned Miss
Gay America 2008.
My given name is Josh Bolin or “JB” as my friends call me. My stage
persona is Mikaila Kay. I grew up in Indian in a small city called South Bend. I
am twenty-four years old… the oldest of three children. My little sister lives
in Missouri, is married, and has a beautiful baby boy. My little brother lives
in Tucson Arizona with my mother. Family is my rock and one thing I hold onto
tightly in my life. Without the love and support of our families and relatives,
we are nothing. My mother has been there through thick and thin, she has been
supportive of me and is so proud. “I’m a mother of a Miss America!” she
says. I love her and all of my family very much. I currently reside in Phoenix
Arizona with my loving husband. I made history in Arizona as being the first
Miss Gay America from Arizona. I am so excited to represent Arizona and DRS
Promotions (my promoters for Miss Gay Western States) and put Arizona on the map
in history.
I
am so excited to be representing all of America and L&T Entertainment. I am
going to learn so much and grow from this amazing journey I am about to embark
upon. I look forward to meeting all of the promoters, contestants and friends,
that I will make along the way. I will be making memories to cherish and hold
onto for a lifetime. I am now a part of what every female illusionist dreams
of… The Miss Gay America family. It is such an honor and privilege to be
working with so many talented and amazing people. I’m still in shock after
winning. I put my heart and soul into it and kept focused on my goal and I did
it. Last year was my first Miss Gay America experience and I placed 32nd. I took
all of the critiques from the judges and advice from people and former Miss Gay
America’s and came back strong and determined.
My advice?... Don’t ever let anyone tell you, you can’t. Don’t doubt
yourself or your gut feelings. Do what makes you happy, decorate your door how
you want to. Show the judges, the contestants and the audience who you are.
You’re a unique individual with a passion for the art of female
impersonation and you strive to be the best. Show them when the lights come on
and the music intro plays and you step onto the stage, that it’s your moment
and that you have what it takes to be Miss Gay America.

The Best of the Best?
Depending
on who you ask, most will tell you that the Miss Gay America contestants, on the
national level, are truly the “best of the best”…not only because they are
winners for qualifying on the national level, either as winner of first
alternate of their preliminaries, but also because they are the best in their
craft. The contestants of the Miss Gay America pageant system take a male body,
add pads, clothing, make-up, hair and accessories, and then they have created a
true female illusion. But being the “best of the best” goes far beyond a
look…it also is about talent, mannerisms, behavior and reputation. Overall, we
are quite proud of the contestants who enter this system. Furthermore,
collectively, we are quite proud of the heritage that the former Miss Gay
America titleholders have established. Together, between what the former Miss
Gay America titleholders have accomplished and what the contestants are trying
to accomplish, it is our contention, that the most recent national competition,
validated the statement that this system is, “the best of the best”.
Not only are we saying this, but there are so many others that are saying it as
well. Many of our contestants have been approached by promoters of other
systems, asking that they consider coming to another system. While a lot of the
solicitation is sales efforts, to increase numbers, the major reason that other
systems want to solicit the
America
contestants, is because of the structure and discipline required to be
successful in the Miss Gay America pageant system. If one could state a single
word about the contestants, the first thing that likely comes to mind is
professional. Too often we hear of a particular person, not having the “total
package” and lacking in one area or another. That is the very reason why we
require so much of the titleholders of this system…as we want the world to see
that these contestants have it all…stage presence, the look, the talent,
discipline and professionalism needed to help promoters have a better pageant
experience. Those contestants
who lack in one area or another usually will “weed themselves” from the pack
and it will be obvious, those who exemplify the standard excellence. But, we
will continue to require nothing short of excellence as we want to continue to
hear the incredible comments that we are hearing from the audience, which is,
this is a very professionally managed organization that provides an incredible
source of entertainment for the world… It is comments such as this, that keeps
us moving forward and realizing growth.
If Mikaila
Kay was a surprise to you, that she won Miss Gay America, you will see, in the
video that he was consistent in each category. He once again proved that
consistency wins pageants in this system. He placed 32nd last year,
never made Top 10 until this year and then was 1st alternate to his
preliminary. His winning only proves that contestants should not take anything
for granted and if prepared, even the rookie contestants can hold their own
against the veteran competitors. In fact, 4 of this year’s Top 10 contestants
were new to the Top 10 and 2 were newcomers to the national competition. To all
the contestants, who gave it their all, we say thank you.
The City of
Memphis
saw an incredible competition, that they will speak of for a long time to come.
We look forward to working with Mikaila Kay-Miss Gay America 2008 and hope that
his reign is as magical as he will allow it to be.
Until
next time….

Terry
