April 2007 Edition Of Excellence
The "L" Word! (L for Love, L for Life and L for
Luscious)
Finally, 5
month’s into my reign and the preliminary season has begun.
You guys don’t know how excited I am to tour this country from prelim
to prelim as Miss Gay America. Formers,
if you are reading this, please take a minute to think back on the anxiety you
felt en route to your first prelim. Luckily
mine was like a family reunion with 5 formers in attendance as well as the
National Promoters. Stress
Free!
The Miss Gay
Mid America Regional Preliminary was held on March 16th at The
Madison Flame nightclub in
Memphis
,
TN.
It began with a cute, lil’
luncheon at the host hotel with nothing but carbs!!!!
Lord, I have to work out intensely throughout the week just to balance
out the buffets the promoters are gonna shove in my face over the weekend!
But a big girl like me ain’t complaining about food but so much! There
were 3 eager contestants vowing for there tickets to Miss Gay America 2008.
I thoroughly enjoyed my short time with each of them.
Stephanie
,
China
, and Kristin were all very pleasant to work with.
The camaraderie backstage was sickening!
At the end of the night China Collins captured the crown with Kristin
Collins as her first alternate. Congratulations
team Collins, and good luck at Nationals.
I have to
give a shout out to some faces I saw in the audience at Mid America.
Rodney Brown and Mike Divoky, promoters of Miss Heart of America
(to be held on May 6, 2007) Will Pappas, Miss Smoky Mountain America Regional
Prelim to be held on June 24, 2007) promoter was there with Mercedes Alexander.
The Miss Gay M.I. crooked letter crooked letter….lol – Mississippi
promoters (to be held on June 09, 2007), Nicole DuBois, Rusty Croy and Andy
Warren were in attendance, The Miss Gay Tennessee (to be held September 28,
2007) and Florida (to be held September 10, 2007) promoters, PJ and Paulette
were in the hizzz-ouse! It’s
awesome to see the promoters supporting each others prelims.
Plus it’s also sickening, P.R./Marketing!
*whispers* “I
don’t see anything wrong with snatching up some potential contestants”.
For those of you in attendance that I missed, please hold it against my
brain and its terrible memory…and not my heart!
Before I go
into detail about my April calendar, I would like to announce that with much
anticipation and hesitation, I have finally put in notice at my job that I will
no longer be able to clock in and surf the net.
LOL I’m just
going to be out way too much going forward for me to keep requesting time away.
On a positive note, it’s time for change anyway.
I might need help making the bills MGA supporters, so I’ll definitely
have my eyes open for a benefactor!!!
My April
calendar is quite festive.
Miss
Delaware
is this coming weekend. I’m super
excited to be hitting that MGA saturated section of the country.
So many of the friends I’ve made through competition are up in that
area of the country! Y’all
better come see a girl!!
Miss Gay
Western States America Regional (4-7-07) is right around the corner.
“
Tucson
, here we come!” (Romie and
Michelle’s high school reunion????).
I have to break out my lil’ black book whenever I hit
Arizona
*giggle*. BTW, when’s the
last time we had a bachelor MGA????
I’ll be
relinquishing a title in
Hickory
,
NC
as well.
Miss
NC
@ Large.
Miss Gay
Maryland (4-21-07 thru 4-23-07) will be my first state prelim.
I’m sure the
Maryland
promoters and Andora Tetee have a flawless event planned.
I need my Duwanna Suites confirmation number again!!!
Also in April
will be the MGA Retreat and the Miss Tri States America
Regional Preliminary (4-28-07 and 4-29-07) in St.Louis, MO.
I’ve never been to
St. Louis
so I can’t wait for this!!! I
hear they’ve got some “buckin” queens up in those parts, so I’ll have to
pack my dancing shoes and knee pads and things.
I’ll really have to go for what I know on the dancefloor!
On a side
note, I’m open to the possibility of touring in between prelims.
So promoters/show directors, let’s make it happen!
Lusciousmga2007@aol.com
I’ll see
you on the road!

The Expectations of a Titleholder……
We want to
remain clear in that we expect, from the titleholders, on all levels
(City/Metropolitan, State, Regional and National), the very same level of
professionalism that we (L & T Entertainment) provide. Regardless of whether
you hold a busy title (i.e Miss Gay Texas America, Miss Gay Ohio America, Miss
Gay Missouri America etc.) or a not so busy title, such as a regional title, the
requirements are the same. That is, professionalism, both on stage and off
stage. Titleholders must remember that you are volunteering for the position, or
job, of a contest, and those who were your competitors and did not win, or those
who aspire to one day hold the very title that you hold, automatically place you
on a plateau of excellence and they watch every move. Not only imitating many of
your actions on stage, but also off stage. For this reason, we are very strict
on the behavior of a titleholder. You must not only look the part, but also act
the part. Some of the things that others immediately notice, include but is not
limited to, administrative
abilities, attitude, appearance, emcee skills, performance, punctuality and
talent…and the list goes on and on. Not only will the ”wanna be
contestants” follow you during your reign but they will also follow you after
your reign. One may think that once you relinquish a title, there is no
accountability but we remind you that we have at least, three former
titleholders (not from the national level) that have been suspended from
participation in anyway, due to unprofessional conduct.
Simply said, if you cannot look and act the part, we do not want you to be part
of this great system until you do. Our goal is to make our job, on the national
level, in holding this system together, an easier one. And by doing so, the jobs
of the city, state and regional promoters also become easier. If you have any
questions about a certain behavior, or something you are thinking about doing,
most likely, you should not do it. Contestants should refer to the rules and
regulations for contestants and titleholders, for more detail. You can ask any
of the former Miss Gay America titleholder, or Miss Gay America 2007-Luscious,
about our high expectations of them. All of the former Miss Gay America’s, we
consider to be the “cream of the crop” and the eyes of the world will never
be off of them, which is why we tell them that they must continue the
excellence, far beyond their final walk as the reigning Miss Gay America. We are
very fortunate to have an incredible group of former Miss Gay America’s and we
know that from the past few years of competition, there will be several future
Miss Gay America titleholders from this present crop, so we must begin their
preparation today! We always tell the contestants, when they ask us for advice,
if you want to become Miss Gay America, you must act like it today, and every
day. Otherwise, if you try to pretend, for a few days of competition, during the
week of the national competition, the judges will most likely see through the façade
as there will be something, albeit small, that will shout to the judges, that
the certain contestant is not ready to take on the role of the most prestigious
titleholder in the country. We do not call the titleholders of this system,
“The Symbol of Excellence” for naught.
We pledge
to you, the country, to hold accountable the titleholders, for their every
action. By their accountability, the titleholders of this system will continue
to be something we can all be proud of…..and that is to be called, a true
“Symbol of Excellence”.
Until next time,
Larry and
Terry

the Promoters Perspective….

Brian Alexander (Promoter of Miss Gay East Coast America)
Miss
East Coast America is a two-time nominee for the Miss Gay America Regional
Preliminary of the Year Award
Happy Spring to Everyone!
I would
like to first, take the opportunity to thank L&T Entertainment for giving me
the privilege of writing this months Spotlight article. My journey in the
America Pageantry system began in 1995. I attended several city preliminaries
within the state of Maryland that year. I was so impressed with how the
preliminaries were run and how incredible the contestants were, that I wanted to
be part of it. I then became close friends with Nicole James, who was and always
will be a leader in the art of female impersonation within
Western Maryland
. Nicole taught me right from the start about what standards were expected, to
always be completely professional, and never to turn my back on anyone. “That
advice still stands true today”. I
then became a contestant in 1998, and was fortunate enough to win two titles
within that year (one being a preliminary to Miss Gay Maryland America). I went
to state competition that year, had a wonderful time, and learned many new
things. Unfortunately, my life got a
little too busy and I was unable to find the time to continue participating in
the art, however, I did manage to find some time to become a backup dancer for a
few contestants. After a little time went by, I then decided I wanted to become
a promoter. Roger Dimick, promoter of Miss Gay Maryland, welcomed me with open
arms. After my first year of being a promoter, I was hooked. I LOVED IT! Roger
was so supportive to me, and I ended up promoting Miss Vogue, Miss Deer Park,
and a share of Miss Western MD.
During this several year stretch, I was fortunate enough to win several
preliminary of the year awards, as well as Best Promoter in 2002. In
2005, I decided that I wanted to purchase and promote my own contest that would
go directly to Miss Gay America. After speaking with Raquel, Larry, and Terry,
this became a reality. Raquel was so incredible with the support, attention,
communication, and professionalism that I felt so much like a part of the family
right from the beginning. In my
first year, Miss Gay East Coast America 2005, I had Stephanie Micheals as my
winner, and Andora Te’Tee as my first alternate. They both were so incredible
at Miss Gay America, and I was so proud of them. I was also fortunate enough to
get nominated for Best Regional Preliminary of the year. What a surprise and
honor!
I then started to prepare for Miss East Coast America 2006. All I can say
is that I thought Nicole; you have some big shoes to fill with me after having
such a great year with Raquel. Well guess what? Nicole had absolutely no
problems filling her shoes. She was very professional, supportive, and provided
100% of her attention to everyone she came in contact with. In
May 2006, we held Miss Gay East Coast
America
. It was a great pageant and I was very fortunate to have Coti Collins as my
winner, and Chantel Reshae as my first alternate. As
anyone can imagine, I was so excited to know that it was going to be another
great year at Miss Gay America, and trust me it was. These
girls worked so hard!!!!! Coti ended up being first alternate to Miss Gay
America and Chantel ended up being 7th overall. Not to mention, I was
again nominated for Best Regional Preliminary of the year. What an honor again
to have great contestants and be recognized for your hard work.
I was very pleased that Miss Gay Maryland and Miss Gay DC Regional won
preliminary of the year awards. They worked so hard to achieve this. The
experience I have had since entering Miss Gay America, as a promoter has been
unbelievable. I have met so many wonderful people, been blessed with incredible
contestants/representatives, and look very forward to continue meeting and
working with new people.
I would like to take a moment to say thank you
to Nicole James, Roger Dimick, Raquel Chevallier, Nicole Dubois, Larry, Terry,
Stephanie Micheals, Andora Te’Tee, Chantel Reshae, and Coti Collins for being
there throughout these last two years. It is all of you who have made Miss
East Coast America so successful and well known throughout the country.
This years Miss Gay East Coast
America
will be held on May 27, 2007 at Deer Park Lodge in
Boonsboro
,
MD.
Please visit the Miss Gay America
website for details, as well as www.deerparklodge.net,
then click on the Miss East Coast America Tab.
I would like to wish all the contestants,
promoters, formers, and Luscious, the Best of Luck this year and remember
“support” is the way to go. Please support all of the new and seasoned
contestants as well as the new and seasoned promoters. It’s through support
that we will unite, succeed, and continue to grow for many years to come.
Thank you,
Brian Alexander

From the Promoters Perspective
by: PJPaulie Productions
Promoter of the Miss Gay Florida America and the Miss Gay Tennessee America pageants
Miss Tennessee America is
a nominee for the Miss Gay America State Preliminary of the Year Award
“How
Were We To Know”
How could
PJPaulie have known what was in store for us when we joined the
America
family. We had a remarkable first year with Miss Tennessee 2006 which was
delightful having three prelims to the state pageant which was in September,
right before the Nationals in October. Then much to our surprise we were
nominated our very first year for State Preliminary of the year! Wow! We
remember being back stage when Nicole made the announcement, we were thrilled!
So, we assumed we did something right the first time around. We guess that we
must have added more fuel to our fire because we soon became the new promoters
for
Florida
. Everyone said you really must have the love for all this pageantry to add
another into the PJPaulie fold. We soon began getting prelims going in
Florida
with the first in December 2006. To date there will be at least four with
another one or two in the works. Additionally, the Miss Gay Tennessee America
pageant is blossoming as we anticipate at least four city preliminaries this
year.
We have a
great love for the art form of female illusion and let me tell you, there could
not be a finer “family” with whom to work.
We first got to know Luscious back in December when she came back here to
Memphis
, then again in February at our Mardi Gras Gala, and most recently at the Miss
Mid America Pageant. To those of you who haven't yet had her at your prelims,
you all are in for a treat. This child brings “down
the house”. She has the
grace and beauty of a “princess” and the alarming stage presence of a
magician working his magic. She has the ability to make you cry with one song
and then bring you to your feet on the next! This “girl” really has it all
and it stands to reason after a performance why “she” is Miss Gay America
2007.
Tennessee
and
Florida
are off to a great start this year but nothing could be possible without all
the support that we keep getting where ever we go. I can tell you all we have
the best National owners in the business but you probably all ready know that,
and we can say that we also have the best representative in Luscious, but you
probably all ready know that too, so I will tell you that we have a great system
and family within L & T .
As we all are
going to work on our different projects and prelims, keep in mind that the
“best is yet to be”. From PJPaulie to you, “have a wonderful pageant
season”.
How were we
to know, what was in store for us, as we strive to always bring “the best of
the best”.
