January 2007 Edition Of Excellence

The "L" Word! (L for Love, L for Life and L for
Luscious)
Happy Holidays to everyone.
I spent the weekend at home with mom and dad in Charlotte, NC and enjoyed a
quiet “blockbuster” weekend. I’m “sooooo” a blockbuster kinda gal anyway! If
you’re anything like me, then you like a good independent film from time to
time. I’ll suggest one at the end of this edition of the “L” word.
I visited Memphis, TN earlier this month for L&T’s fathers/daughter retreat.
It was awesome getting to know these two gentlemen on a personal level. I knew
of them only in the idea of the Miss Gay America promoters, as I’m sure they
knew only of me through my on stage categories as a previous MGA contestant.
After they fed me to pure oblivion, we discussed plenty of the gritty details
associated with my job description as Miss Gay America. I must admit that I
was a little nervous and overwhelmed in the idea that I would have so many
preliminaries this year and I would be responsible for overseeing them to
great success. I now see why Miss Gay America needs to be well rounded not
only as an entertainer, but as an administrator.
It’s starting to feel real. I’ve been scheduling prelims and tours left and
right. At this point, I have contacted each of the current promoters to
introduce myself and chat a bit. Similarly, I want to extend that same
invitation to each of you to contact me should you need me.
Dallas, TX was a blast. The weather was actually pretty pleasant when I was
there. I enjoyed the company of the cast of the Rose Room and got to see
veteran MGA contestant, Aspen Tyler. She came out to support and offered some
sickening makeup tricks! That’s one club I don’t mind going to perform, they
know how to have a good time in Dallas. Thanks for taking me shopping and
eating Layla Larue! You know, I’m starting to see a trend. The people must
know I love to eat. I think I should weigh myself at the beginning of pageant
season, and post a big oversize “the biggest loser” scale on stage final night
to display to the world how you’ve all contributed to me blowing up over the
course of the year. You shady queens!!!!!! LOL
On December 17, I was fortunate enough to be present at a city prelim to Miss
Florida America. The Viper Room, in Clearwater, FL hosted the Miss Pride of
Florida America prelim. This was my first official capacity to exercise my
Miss Gay America administrative duties. There were 2 lovely contestants, April
Fresh and CoCo Montrese. Both of these girls brought fire to show that they
were both already in the frame of mind to compete at the state competition. At
the end of the night, CoCo Montrese was crowned Miss Pride of Florida America,
and April Fresh was 1st alternate. They are going to make an exceptional team
at Miss Gay Florida America.Vicki Vincent was on hand to help me navigate this
prelim to shore. Vicki, along with the promoters Gary and Jacobi prepared a
lovely luncheon for the contestants and their supporters during registration.
More Food! I hear that Vicki and I will cross paths a couple times this year
at prelims as she has been hired as emcee to many of them. This is awesome
news to me, as we meshed as if we’ve known each other for years!
In January, I’ll be paying a visit to the show bar of the owner of Miss Gay
Smokey Mountain, Will Pappas. I hope to get to see some of the Tennessee girls
like, Mercedes Alexander and Annastacia Beaverhousen. In January, I’ll also be
visiting Indianapolis, IN. to perform at Talbott Street. Calling Alana
Steele?????
In closing, there’s a cute little movie that I saw this past weekend (it’s
subtitled) called 20 Centimeters. Look it up, see if it’s worth your time. I
was hesitant about it but figured I’d give it a view since it was produced by
a production company that I like called TLA Releasing. They do quite a bit of
gay friendly “indy” films. I waited in a long line yesterday to see the movie
Dreamgirls. The fashions were lovely, the singing was incredible, the acting
was so-so, in my opinion. Although Eddie Murphy turned it out to me!!!!
Hot Performance List
1. One Night Only (Disco) – Dreamgirls special edition soundtrack
2. Green Light/Freakum Dress – Beyonce
3. Say it Right – Nelly Furtado
Until Next Time, Happy New Year !

Happy New Year!!!
As we begin the New Year,
we hope that this finds that each of you have enjoyed the holiday season and
that you are getting ready for another exciting year of competition. As Luscious
takes us into the Miss Gay America 2008 pageant season, we anticipate another
year of excellence. We have had our annual “Fathers/Daughter” Retreat weekend
with Luscious and feel that administratively, he is ready to begin his duties,
in official capacity as Miss Gay America 2007. As we have said numerous times
before, our job is to continue to select quality promoters so that the job of
Miss Gay America will be an easier one. There will most always be an issue to
arise, however, considering the current group of state and regional promoters,
we are confident that the basic operation of this system, will be smooth. We
continue to strive to make the job of both the reigning Miss Gay America and the
promoters, an easier one. With various help lists, instruction detail and
clarity of guidelines, the job of serving as promoter or as a reigning Miss Gay
America will likely be easier than ever before. We often say that investing into
this pageant system is like a getting a “pageant in a can”. The work is done for
you, we provide to you, the regulations for promoters and contestants, the score
sheets, the crown and the administrative support, from both the national office
and the reigning Miss Gay America, thus leaving the difficult part of seeking
contestants and growing an audience base, to the promoters.
As we anticipate several new preliminaries, this pageant season, we expect to be
at or near 60 qualified contestants this year. We continue to work to grow the
system, but refuse to sacrifice integrity…We pride ourselves in knowing that we
offer the contestants a fair chance in competition. It is completely up to the
contestant how far they can succeed in this system. There have been many that
have competed in this system that have never won the national title…many whom we
feel in our hearts would be incredible Miss Gay America titleholders but
unfortunately, for some reason or another, they have fallen short in their
competition. Competition seems to be getting more difficult with each passing
year. Which is the reason, a well prepared, consistent competition package
usually means that the particular contestant will be a good Miss Gay America.
Regardless of how well prepared (to be the national titleholder) we think the
winner is, it is our responsibility to ensure their administrative preparedness.
The ability to look good and perform well is only a small part of the total
skills needed to be a successful Miss Gay America. In fact, looking good and
performing well are expected and are a given, but the administrative ability to
supervise the preliminaries is one that will likely be a “work in process”
throughout the reign. We will however, provide the reigning Miss Gay America and
the promoters, will all tools necessary to ensure a successful contest. After
all, we want the promoter to return, the following year, and we want to hear the
reigning Miss Gay America titleholder say, at the conclusion of his reign, that
his reign was “challenging, but one of the most rewarding years” of his career.
The crop of contestants who competed in the Miss Gay America 2007 pageant was
unparalleled. Generally speaking, they were well prepared for competition and
their presence showed the many dollars and tireless hours of coaching that was
invested into their competition package. While some shined brighter than others,
each was a winner in their own right, for having qualified to compete in this
most prestigious national competition. As soon as the contestants name is
called, as the new Miss Gay America titleholder, their life is changed forever.
For not only are they instantly thrust into “star-dome” but they are
automatically placed on a higher level of expectation in terms of professional
(both on-stage and off-stage), beauty and talent. Thus the importance of a
quality panel of judges who are well versed on the regulations, category
descriptions and job description associated with this pageant system. The power
of the judges is frightening, when considering they are basically choosing the
kind of year the pageant will have, for the upcoming year, with their decision
of the next titleholder. Regardless of the choice of the judges, the promoter
must work with the titleholder to ensure the best possible year ahead. We look
forward to the year ahead, as Luscious is intelligent, lovely, talented and has
a great attitude…which is the very foundation needed to be a great Miss Gay
America.
As we all venture together in this new year, we are very excited to see that the
search for the next Miss Gay America is already in process. This year promises
to be as exciting as the last two years, and we, at the Miss Gay America
national office are very thankful of your affiliation with this system. Whether
you are a contestant, promoter or audience member, your role is crucial to the
continued success of this system. We look forward to providing continued
improvements in the quest for “Excellence”.
We wish you all a very prosperous, happy and healthy New Year.
Until next time…
Larry & Terry
