October 2006 Edition Of Excellence
Du'Bois' Dish By Nicole DuBois (MGA 2006)

What a busy month it has been. Starting off with Miss North
Carolina Regional. My dear sister Scarlet Dailey picked me up at the airport for
a quick pageant. With 5 contestants, the girls came from all over. Promoters
Steve and Crae had invited my MGA sisters, Sabrina and Maya to judge as well as
entertain…I always have a blast with those two beauties. Also in attendance for
the festivities were my gorgeous D. C. promoters-bearing gifts of roses and
chocolates, along with Allan, who fed me grapes…I love you!!! By night’s end,
Scarlet crowned Miss D. Meaner and Ginger Grant was 1st alternate. Congrats
ladies…
Next up was Miss Arkansas. What an awesome time I had in Little Rock, complete
with Norman a/k/a Norma Kristie-MGA73, picking me up at the airport in this
lovely hoopty…the first night was fun, as myself, along with many former MGAA’s
were treated to a limo ride on a bar tour and reception honoring Megan
Michaels-Miss Gay Arkansas 2005. We had a great evening complete with many
cocktails and laughs. With this being the largest state pageant to date, with 17
contestants, this truly was an exceptional pageant. A great time was had by all
including backstage and audience members. Taylor Madison Monroe was victorious
and Raven St. James as her first alternate. Good job Arkansas Alumi!…thank you
for such a wonderful time!
Then, on to Mobile, Alabama, for the Miss Alabama Regional pageant. This contest
was held at B-Bobs Downtown. Gary, Tim and Bar owner Jerry were my new promoters
for the event. Congrats on a job well done, boys. In this new preliminary we had
8 contestants from as far as D.C. to Louisiana competing. Also on hand
entertaining was MGA 2005 Raquel Chevallier, Miss Gay Louisiana America
2006-Savannah Delorean, and 1st alternate to Miss Gay Mississippi 2006-Madison
LeShay. In the audience we had one of my daddy’s- Larry Tyger, Mike and Darwin,
Tiffany Alexander and Miss Gay Mississippi America-Brittney O’Bryan. After a
long, hot night of competition, Ashley Kruiz of Atlanta, Georgia was winner with
Jacquiline Jalissa of Pensacola as 1st alternate. Work it out girls!
Next, I was off to St. Louis, Missouri for the Miss Midwest Regional pageant. I
was treated like royalty by new promoters, Joe, Vicki and Howard of The Complex.
I also had the privilege of staying with Tumara Mahorning, in her beautiful
home…thank you for opening your home and your heart to me. While visiting, I got
to see Miss Fran, Deanne, Victoria DePaula, Reba, David, Frank and Greg, as well
as Michelle McCauseland—I love you ladybug! Thank you all for your wonderful
hospitality. We only had 2 fabulous contestants but by nights end we crowned
Anastacia Davenport of Louisiana and Dieta Pepsi, from St. Louis as first
alternate. Also on hand were 1st alternate to Mid America 2006-China Collins,
Miss Gay Missouri America 2006-Victoria DePaula, former Miss Gay Missouri
America-Vicki Valentine, my Miss Gay America sister Vicki Vincent and 1st
alternate to Miss Gay Missouri 2006, Madison Elise. I also got to visit with my
other daddy-Terry W. Eason. A big thank you to my St. Louis family for a faboo
time…I hope to be able to visit with you very soon.
Miss Gay Texas has been the largest preliminary this year, with 35 qualified
contestants. Congrats to Manny and Esther on an amazing job of holding a pageant
of this size, together. The contest ran very smoothly. Also, to Michael and
Richard, the best back stage personnel EVER, you guy’s ROCK!. A special thanks
to The Saint-the host bar for making me feel so very welcome…I love you guy’s.
Also on hand were Layla (no tea) LaRue, Alyssa Edwards (former Miss Gay Texas
America and the reigning Miss Gay US of A), Sweet (Fred) Savage, The Lady (amen)
P T, former Miss Texas America Josephine O’Hara…talk about craziness and laughs
backstage…we had all of it. Love you girls and I thank you for a great time.
This was an amazing contest where on final night, a top 12 was chosen to compete
again in evening gown, talent and on-stage question. The girls brought it. Layla
and I crowned Victoria West. 1st runner up was Layla O’Hara and 2nd runner-up
was Jade DeSante. A few days later Victoria West resigned the title and Jade
DeSante accepted the large responsibilities as Miss Gay Texas America…a
coronation ceremony at The Saint is scheduled for October 11 at The Saint in San
Antonio. Congratulations Jade and thank you for supporting the Miss Gay Texas
America pageant…have a great reign! All contestants are commended on a job well
done and thanks to a great judges panel. Special shout out to Craig Henderson
from Miss Gay US of A for being our lead judge. Thank you Texas for your
hospitality and I look forward to coming back soon for a longer visit. Love to
you all.
The last weekend of September will be Miss Tennessee and Miss Heartland, so good
luck to all of the contestants who plan to enter the last two preliminaries of
the season….but you will have to read about them in my very last column (to be
published in early November 2006)…
Many people ask me…Are you sad that it is almost over?…absolutely not, my
journey has just begun. I have had an amazing reign and am so thankful to have
been able to have been crowned Miss Gay America 2006. It is now time to pass the
scepter on to the next lucky individual…who will it be? There are 52
possibilities as to who my new little sister will be and I am anxious to see one
of those 52 possibilities crowned as Miss Gay America 2007….See you in a few
weeks…Until then, let go and let God!
Smooches,
Nicole DuBois

Another full circle….
We have just completed
another full circle of preliminary pageant competition and we can say that in
general, the entertainers that will be competing for the title of Miss Gay
America 2007, are nothing short of incredible. While the veterans of competition
are always expected, by many, to bring a strong competition package to the
nationals, the majority expect that the newcomers are only coming to the
nationals to learn... not this year…according to what we have seen, and what
Nicole confirms. There are several new competitors to this system that are going
to give a “tough fight” for a position in the Top 10. We have been informed and
have witnessed incredible talent, lovely gowns and strong interviews throughout
the year, that will make this year one of the most memorable Top 10 in the
history of this contest. With the ability to change gown and to alter talent
(for those who make the Top 10), final night might prove to be very interesting.
This year we were fortunate enough to attend Western States, Mid-America,
Tri-States, Missouri, Louisiana, Alabama, Mid-West, Texas, Tennessee and
Heartland. We were pleased with the overall performance of the pageants, we have
attended.
Unfortunately, in the midst of the good, there was some bad. There were six
contestants suspended this year for actions which were deemed inappropriate by
many. While it is frustrating that we must divert attention from doing the
“normal” day to day operation of this pageant system, however we want to remain
clear that we will, in no way, tolerate unacceptable behavior and we will act
accordingly. The concept is very easy…we ask all affiliated with this system, to
act in the best interest of the system. If you question whether or not your
actions are in the best interest of the system, then you are encouraged to act
in a different manner.
We always seem to get nervous this time of year, not knowing who will next be
chosen as Miss Gay America,… but we have confidence in our panel of judges to
select the best man for the job. As Nicole can attest, this job is not always as
glamorous as it seems, when one is performing a ballad number in the beautiful
crown. There are many off-stage situations to deal with. One can become
overwhelmed when thinking about the issues that need to be handled. This is when
organization, good administrative skills, great public image and the ability to
handle a crisis situations can see you through your reign and hopefully you can
say that your experience was worthwhile and fulfilling.
To Miss Gay America 2007…we say, get ready for hopefully one of the best years
of your life, but also one of the hardest years of your life. The eyes of the
world will forever be upon you. You are expected to live up to the image known
as the Symbol of Excellence. While each Miss Gay America has been unique, the
expectations have generally been the same. If you live up to the expectations,
you will have a fabulous reign. If you don’t…..then you might have a more
difficult time than some of the “Sisterhood”. Our requirements of you are not
only for the good of this organization but are also to maximize your potential
of making a positive mark in the history of the Miss Gay America pageant system.
Enjoy wearing the crown, but respect it. Never take it for granted and always
let others know the respect, hard work, dedication, determination and love for
the art form, you must possess to perfect your craft and to win the crown. When
you are crowned, rest assured that there will be those who say you deserved to
win, but also rest assured that some will that you did not. If you do your job
and reign with the utmost of professionalism, integrity and dignity, usually the
nay-sayers will love you at the end of your reign. The next year will be the
very best that you make of it. We look forward to working with you and thank you
in advance for helping this system to accomplish our objectives which are to
strengthen and to grow in terms of number, professionalism and talent… both
on-stage and off-stage.
To our contestants, promoters and audience, we thank you for your support.
Without you, there would be no Miss Gay America pageant system for the last 35
years. With you, we can grow this system and show the world that this form of
entertainment is as alive and thriving, as in its beginning. As we are to soon
celebrate the 35th annual Miss Gay America pageant, we are excited to see many
familiar faces and make friends with many new ones. We have worked hard to make
this year, the best year of national pageantry competition for female
impersonation and we are thankful that your interest continues.
As there can only be one winner, we ask you to embrace him and welcome him into
the Miss Gay America pageant system. He has a very difficult job ahead, and your
support is not only needed, but greatly appreciated. Rest assured that no matter
the winners, the nay-sayers will be around, but if history repeats itself, more
often than not, at the conclusion of his reign, the nay-sayers will become fans
and realize that the judges, chose wisely…..
Until next time…
